5w-20 vs. -30

just pick up some mobil1 5w-20 (live in pa) and realized everyone seems to be putting -30 weight in their RAs...u guys think i should go swap it out or is there not any compelling reason to use -30 over -20?

I noticed that when I went to the dealership for an oil change a couple back, that they put 5w-20 in. I thought the RA manual recommended that we use 5w-30 synthetic? I'll take a look in a little bit.

Found the thread, this should help

Oil for the ra

There are plenty of posts on this forum regarding oil, so you should probably just do a search. Simply put, many people would argue that there is much better synthetic oil out there than Mobil1 (which isn't truly synthetic anyways).

If it were the winter time, I'd say it doesn't matter, but 5w30 will be better able to deal with the higher operating temperatures that go along with summer.

ive used 5w-30 in my 09 gts and 5w-20. id say to use 5w30 in the ralliart , you dont want to put the same oil in your engine as people with 08 and 09 lancers do. at least i wouldnt think so.

20 weight oil is certainly thinner than 30 weight. 20 weight will improve gas mileage as there is slightly less viscosity (and therefore friction) on moving parts. But since it's thinner it will shear easier, and when that happens, you will most likely get metal to metal contact (You NEVER want that). You also don't want to go too high (like say a 50 weight maybe) because the pump and the oil gallies may have not been designed to flow enough oil at that weight, and therefore, you would starve parts of oil, and again get metal to metal contact. During the summer, you can probably use 10W-30, but if you're not a cheapskate (and care about what's best for your motor), you should use high quality 0W-30 synthetics like RedLine, AmsOil, Royal Purple, etc.

The specifications page for the Lancer says 5-W30 for the Ralliart and 5-W20 for the lesser models.

There is no way that it is that hard to find a good 0w-30 synthetic in one of the biggest metropolitan areas in the country. You're just obviously looking in the wrong places.

N1Mr0D, you can certainly use whatever oil you like in your own car, but you won't ever find me using a 20-weight in any of mine.

Ok I didn't say I can't find that viscosity oil, I said I can't find amsoil in my area. And I have talked to some shops, checked on amsoil website, talked to distributors on this website and got a quote not only very expensive but I would have to pay shipping which is also a lot! and no "pep boys" or discount or autozone have it. Don't tell me I haven't tried hard enough! If that oil is so good which I don't doubt it is, they need to market it better and get more places selling it!!
