delayed shifting into reverse
I've had this happen to me a few times when backing out from a parking spot...
I'll start the car, then drop the shifter into reverse, and give it some slight acceleration only to have the engine free rev as if it was in neutral. Then after about 2-3 seconds the gear will catch with a decent jerk and it will reverse. Normally as soon as i hear it freely revving i let off the gas quickly so it doesn't accelerate too quickly after it shifts.
Normal?

Have you owned/driven a true manual car before? If so, you've probably experienced some similar difficulty getting the gear into reverse. It's really no different here.
The same thing has happened to me a couple times, backing out of the garage. You'll see the gear indicator (P, D, N, R, etc.) light blink on/off as it's having trouble. Shifting it to Park and then back to Reverse usually works (or just leave it idle in Reverse for a few seconds and it will kick in). When the gear indicator light comes back on steady, the SST is ready.

Will do.
Maybe you can answer another question I have... I've seen a few people on this forum recommend to be in sports mode while driving in "manual" mode. It was suggested that doing so reduces clutch wear.... why?
I thought sports mode just changed the shift times when driving in auto?

Usually it's due to the fact thy the car is not warmed up enough. I've done some testing on my Evo and if I put it right into reverse it flashes and then finally goes. If I wait like 30sec works fine. If I haven't driven it for a few hours I let it warm up, but I do see this happening even if I go into the store

I actually haven't looked at the shifter bezel to see if it flashes but I do the same as Jyrk stated, I put it in reverse, hold the brake and my R on the main display will flash once after about 2 secs and then its good to go and no herky-jerky.
