Reverse Gear Grind.

Just a quick question about reverse gear.
Here is my problem. Every time I put the car into reverse while trying to make a quick U turn I get this loud grind, this happens every time I try to put the car into reverse. Now, my syncros were replace under warranty at 5k miles(at 12k now), ever since I've been getting reverse gear grind. I don't recall having this issue before. I have taken the car to the dealer and was told that this is normal. I'm at 12k miles now and the grind is much louder.

I try to avoid the probable by pausing 3-5 secs before putting the car into reverse(to long when trying to make U turn with on coming traffic).
My question to you guys is if anyone else has this problem.

Thank you.

are you at a full stop when you go into reverse? also the evo x doesn't have a reverse gear; it is first and third coming together.

My X does the same thing or use too, it's stopped for the most part but I've trained myself to wait and make sure it's fully engaged, sometimes toggle thru the gears when the cars cold to get the fluid moving. It's probably due to the fact there's no dedicated reverse gear on our cars, it uses 1/3 for a reverse... The possibilities are really endless, who knows?

Shift to 5th before putting it in reverse. It should help/eliminate the problem. I've had to to that on almost every other car that I've driven.

My IX did this bad because my dad thought there was a sixth and buzzed the hub. But that car had a dedicated reverse. I have no idea why it would happen on an Evo X.

Yes, I only shift into reverse when I'm at a complete stop. I don't recall this problem on my IX.

Most manual cars I've owned the past had this problem... a simple workaround to completely fix the shift to reverse grind is:

1.) From Neutral, shift to 1st gear
2.) From 1st gear, quickly shift to reverse

Works everytime.

That's what I do coming from a cold start.

Double clutch, shift to 1st, remove from 1st, release clutch, depress clutch, shift to reverse.

Works like a charm!

It grinds for me, too, sometimes. It doesn't really bother me since this is my first stick and I have nothing to compare it to.

Shifting into 1st then reverse is a true and tried method. Sometimes you might even have to very slightly "rock" the car by letting the clutch out a little while in 1st.

And always take care not to grind your gears, or force it into gear. It's not supposed to do that. Every time you hear grinding, you have a little more metal shavings in your oil.

Agreed. Most cars you would need to engage another gear before reverse.

When cold, I shift to 5th then reverse. The shift is smooth. Try shifting to reverse with 02-03 WRX. No matter what you do, you will grind most of the time.

I have a similar problem.
When I shift into reverse sometimes, it doesn't shift all the way, almost like halfway, and when I start revving it, it makes a loud grinding noise. I could tell the gears aren't really engaged.
I simply just double clutch it.

This is the best advice anyone gave to me when I was learning to drive stick.
