Which Turbo

Hi I am looking at upgrading my turbo and am after advice as to the best route.

I am looking at around 300 ATW HP and am currently running at around 240 HP with the stock turbo.

Options are

HKS GTII 7460R
Garrett 3076R or 3071R
Forced performance

any advice is much appreciated.

Suprisingy the HKS is price competitive.

these are my current best prices

HKS - $2100
FP Green - $1873 (includes porting and heavy duty actuator)
Garrett - between $1800 and $2100
CBRD - $1800

Keep in mind also with the stock x turbo you can hit 300whp. If I had to pick from those and all associated costs..i would go with fp.

Like many others on this board, I have also given the turbo upgrade question substantial consideration.

Sorry to rain on your parade, but in my opinion you have to really determine your budget, and realistic HP target/requirements, and on what dyno it would be measured.

I can tell you for certain that going with one of the well proven modified EVO X style turbos such as a CBRD BBK or FP Green/Red (with other appropriate mods), can give you much better performance than 300ATWP, but I can also tell you for certain that the total cost will be well more than $2000. As has been stated, for those upgrades you need to replace more than just the turbo. You will also need to replace the exhaust manifold, oil lines, coolant lines, 02 sensor, and a host of other parts such as:

1555A476 Exhaust manifold 514.82
MN119784 Exhaust stud x2 (these will not come out of your Ralliart turbo without breaking) 9.73 x2
1515A150 Turbo Outlet pipe 62.20
1515A184 Turbo to manifold gasket 44.10
1555A289 Turbo to 02 housing gasket 40.37
1555A423 O2 housing 171.77
1225a155 Oil feed line 27.22
1225A181 Oil return line 75.97
1310A469 Coolant return pipe 12.10
1310A577 Coolant feed pipe 25.20
MF650114 coolant banjo bolt x2 7.37 x2
MF660065 coolant banjo bolt gasket x4 0.95 x4
1542A042 Inlet elbow 61.08
1515A053 Inlet elbow gasket 10.10
1570B095 Downpipe 304.52

Recommended but not required to work:
1555A320 O2 housing bracket 19.08
MD194403 Oil return line gasket 1.53
1515A166 Compressor housing bracket 19.08
MF140264 Compressor housing bracket bolt 2.23
MF140260 Compressor housing bracket bolt 1.30
MR281085 Turbo outlet pipe gasket (same as Ralliart but new ones are recommended) 4.65

While I have not seriously considered the actual parts needed to upgrade to HKS or Garrett turbos, if I was a betting man I would wager that the upgrade path to either of those turbos will probably entail replacing at minimum all the parts listed above, and probably involve even more cost.

And also don't forget your FMIC will need to be upgraded (if it has not been already), and the exhaust should really be replaced with a full 3" turbo back to get the best results.

On the other hand, if your realistic HP target is 300AWHP, like NFSLancer said above, at $895 the CBRD RAD turbo is a very viable option. We have already seen CBRD make almost 300AWHP on their stingy Mustang dyno with that turbo, and that would probably equate to about 330+ AWHP on a dynojet

If you're going with something bigger than a OEM Evo X turbo, you're going to need camshafts. Without cams, your gains over the OEM Evo X will be REALLY disappointing, with cams, you'll make about 380whp with a fp green and 420whp with a fp red. However, don't look at gains between the green and red, look at your goals. The green has insane low end power and is more okay for a DD, while the red has not a whole lot of low end power but insane high end power and isn't recommended for a DD. So the green is perfect for 1/8 mile while the red is perfect for 1/4 mile, again, it's all about your goals.

Also, bare this in mind, IF you're going to track it with one of these turbo's, lots of other things are highly recommended other than cams. You're looking at a transcooler, 3 port solenoid boost controller, perhaps a bigger oil pan, oil cooler thermostat, small battery kit, sri/cai, wider tires, better brakes, the optional ssp gold trans fluid, and if you want to resist knock and run at much higher boost then you'll need 850cc-1000cc fuel injectors and an aftermarket fuel pump to run E85.

I'm trying to head your route, but no matter how cheap I find all of this new or used, you're looking at more than $5k

I am looking at around 2k for the turbo only I know I will have to upgrade a lot of other parts as well. I am not expecting to just spend 2K.

Where can I get info about the CBRD RAD. I have checked the website and it isn't listed.

Current mods are.

K&N
Boost Pill
HKS cat Back system
FMICP
Creatd tune (Australia)

I currently make 180 kw at the wheels which is around 240 HP. Cars in this tune in Oz are running low 13's
