Question About Oiled Air Filter (Works)
Question About Oiled Air Filter (Works)
Hi everyone!
I bought my 2011 RA in March. I've had the high flow panel filter in from Works since early April.
Since this is an oiled filter, does anyone know how often I need to clean the MAF sensor (or have it cleaned)?
Is once a year enough (when I clean/re-oil the filter) or does it have to be more often than that.
Any advice/help would be appreciated.
Thanks!

I know you said you have a Works filter, but this is what K&N had to say about their oiled filters:

Wow, that pretty much answers the question...haha! I guess there isn't much to worry about.
The primary job of the oil is the to attach to particles making it not possible to escape the filter. So there's a good chance not very much even makes it's way to the MAF sensor.
I spoke to COBB Tuning and they said if ever you see a dramatic reduction in gas mileage or a feeling of loss of power, then it may be the case (amongst other things if the car is modified/tuned).
Alright, nothing to worry about then! Thanks for the input/info/advice.

As someone who as tracked a car for 12 years with a K&N filter, and had the MAF benchmarked as being nearly identical to stock, I can say the following from my personal experience....
If oiled properly, cleaning the MAF doesn't need to be done any more often than with a paper filter (use MAF cleaner or electrical contact cleaner).
It is common to over-oil K&N or Works (aFe) filters when cleaning, causing the excess oil to get on the hot wire of the MAF. After cleaning, I prefer to apply oil only to side of the filter away from the MAF, and let the filter air dry for at least one day before re-installing.

Glad to help.
The end result after cleaning and re-oiling is to have it at about the same oil level that it came with when it was brand new. It can be tricky to get it just right, hence the day of drying time, and a little blotting with paper towel or a cloth if necessary.
One thing I will say with K&N filters though, the gauze between the wire mesh does break down over time. In 12 years I used a K&N filter in the old car (Porsche 928 S4), I had to replace the filter on average ever 4 years, but it was a very hot engine bay.
