Timing belt damaged engine?

I have a 2006 lancer ralliart manual transmission that has 124000k, timing belt snapped and I was wondering if anyone else has had this happen? Did it damage your engine? Don't know if I'm going to have to send out my engine to have it rebuilt? Some things online do say it is Zero tolerance, but others do say theirs went so I'm unsure if I should even bother spending the weekend replacing the belt or just start looking for a new engine? Let me know!
