For all the plasti dip pros : )
For all the plasti dip pros : )
Alright i gotta couple questions for you pros out there. . First off, is there any special way to apply the spray can plasti dip? because i primered the surface and then sprayed it on and it turned out good, but with one swipe of my fingernail the stuff came right off? i heard it was supposed to hold up really good so im thinkin that will definitely get eaten up by rock chips.. And secondly would it be better to buy the dip that comes in the little paint bucket? i just want the cleanest job possible and i want it to last
You primered the surface? The main reason we all use plasti-dip is because you can spray it directly onto the chrome, and peel it off later if you don't like it. I'm not sure how well it will peel off if it's been primered beforehand. The only surface prep you really need to do for plasti-dip is a good cleaning (alcohol wipes or something similar to remove any oil).
You also need to apply a few heavy coats, and allow for everything to dry properly. It should be dry enough to handle and install after a day of drying, but mine wasn't completely "cured" until long after that.
It is still susceptible to rock chips, though. I plasti-dipped my front ring and its got a bunch of spots of chrome showing through it from rocks and debris hitting it. It's been almost two years now, so I'm thinking of peeling it off and respraying this summer.

well i didnt know the main reason you guys use plasti dip considering i've never used it? and to get it off youu just get a scraper or something and scrape it? thats pretty convenient
No need to prime of sand. Apply light coasts let dry 15-20 in between. I put about four coats on my ring. If your going to do the lower bumper all you have to do is Mask it off and repeat the steps above. YOU MUST pull the masking type off the bumper before it dries because if you don't the plastidip will stick to the masking tape. Other than that you will be all set mines help up for over two years now no problems. Even pressure washed the car.
