Pink's ALL OUT ! (New Turbo, New Direction)
I have been BUSY hard at work on my two cars in between customer tuning and running a small business. Its been a while since I reported about progress on the Dyno Flash EVo 8.
My last activity was at the Buschur Import Showdown on May 24.
Here is what happend on that pass
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RAyblOE6Eic
Basically, the # 3 cylinder rod had some porosity or defect in the blank and let loose at 149 mph at the end of the track. I had my hands full to keep the car going staight down the track and get it slowed down.
Here are some pictures of the part of the rod that fractured -

It really pained me when that rod let loose as the rest of the motor, pistons, head gasket, bearings, spark plugs, etc etc all looked 100% mint and clearly it was a great motor. The demands of launching at 8,000 rpms on the two step, holding it to 10,300 rpms in first banging the rev limiter so that the car has enough mph to shift to 2nd without bogging, and the rest of the realities of running a huge ultra laggy turbo make for a very tough life on your rods.
Special thanks to Buschur Racing for helping me to secure a new built short block quickly so I could prepare for the Pinks ALL OUT TV show taping the 3rd week of July.
Since the idea of Pinks All Out requires you to run consistant and reliable and at the end hot lap your car for best two out of three runs I figured sticking with the 1,000 whp plus GT42 R made little or no sense what so ever. I have not seen any Evos run consistant and reliable with huge giant turbos. Simply put pamking 1,000 whp puts huge stress on the internals and the way you have to drive to keep a car like that "in boost" adds even more abuse with huge rpms launch control and crazy 10,300 rpm no lift shifts.
My plan, after watching the huge sucess of the Buschur tuned Gt35 and HTA 35 equiped Evos - not far behind the Gt42 powered Evos in speed but much more consistant and reliable was to ditch the GT42 for the Pinks Race and go with a much smaller and faster spooling medium frame turbo that can get back in boost quicker beteween shifts and which also will make its power at a lower rpm band than on the big monster Gt42 whioch does not really start making power till well after 7,000 rpms.
Master Tuner and my mentor David Buschur has paved the way with his Bad Bish running 9.4 with a HTA Gt35 full street car and a MPH well over 150 mph. We have the Buschur Built Bad Bish II at ICS owned by my Boss George which runs like a MO FO every day all week giving customer's test drives, although that car has never been to a track yet it is clearly a 9 second car all day. Seeing the Buschur tuned cars all running so consistant and reliable started my mind working and I was remembering my own success back in the day with my Gt35 when I was the first to go 9's on a GT35 with basically a full weight street car. For what ever reason, after reaching that mark, I quickly jumped to big and then bigger turbos and looking back I think that was a mistake. The path of David Buschur to refine and optomize the set up to fine evry last possible whp seems to make the most sense to me now.
A car with a smaller turbo is a lot easier to drive and a lot more fun. This is especially the case if the big turbo cars start breaking as is usually the case.
Therefore, to sumarize my plan is to try and make my car more consistant and reliable for RACING by going with a smaller, easier to drive turbo. We'll see how it all works out.
Big thanks to Buschur Racing, as usual my new motor cranked over and started right up tonight. Buschur does it the right way the first time.

I had a crack in my Groden Rods as well, luckily we caught it before we had some major carnage. I'm thinking of stepping down to the hta35r as well, it has proved to go fast, reliable and you won't have to rev to the moon to keep it in boost. Good luck at Pinks, show them domestics that the imports can hang

Al smart choice. I'm doing a second engine, a Pete Rucano Clone with a HTA 35R to develop some new stuff. I know you will have way more fun with the 8 now and spend more time driving and less time wrenching. Wish you all the best and good luck on Pinks, Indy
