Rich Idle

Car 2003 EVO 8
Mods 3"DP/Exhaust/no cat
Fuel Pump 255lph
Cone intake
Hard IC Pipes

AEM EMS EVO 1313
3.5 Bar Transducer
GM AIT

Map Start up .cal File (1313 MAP V 1.11)

Problems

When I start the car it takes about 4 seconds for it to start
And when it idles the AFR is 11.1:1 to 11.0:1 and it idles hard (Normal AFR @ idle is 14.7:1)

There are no AEM tuners in my area (32218, Jax FL)
The one nearest to me is in Orlando, but I need the car to run to get it there. I have read through the book, but can’t quite get how to tune it. If any one could edit the map that comes with the AEM and send it to me so that I can get it to a tuning pro that would be great. If not then advise me how to tune it my self… Thanks

If you are not comfertable, have it towed. You can cause some damage if you're not sure.

I've tuned a few cars that liked to idle around 13.5 or so.

Question. Is this rich idle only on cold start? Or can you even run the car to get it warm?

I'll see if I have a map you could use to get you moving.

This is Simple, put your stock ecu in and drive it to the tuner in Orlando. The AEM is a VERY powerful tool that can cause you a nightmare.

I don't know crap about the EMS at this point. I just got mine last night. I'm running the MAF set up with larger injectors. Mine fired right up after the 4 second sync time but ran like crap until it fully warmed up. From what I can tell the warm up enrichment tables are very conservative in the base map and will require much fiddling to get to run smoothly until it gets up to full operating temp (~175degF or so).

Its really easy to get your idle right in the AEM. First turn off your o2 feedback and then tune the fuel map to as close as you can get it. Then turn the o2 feeback back on. But really the EVO likes a 14.0 to 14.5 idle. I know the 14.7 is standard but for some reason it likes to be a pig at idle.

Yup, that is correct on the stock cams. For HKS 272's you have to bump the A/F down to around 11:1 to get a good idle though. Perhaps his tuner used a base map that was set up to idle on big cams?

DXL007, If you want pm me and I will give you my email address. I can take a look at your cal file and I will do my best to point you in the correct direction on what changes to make. I will probably be able to at least get you where you can drive it to a tuner. This way you won't be stuck switching everything back over to the stock ECU.

I know that you are probably regretting this but you should of tuned it with the maf first this way you have a back up by using the stock ECU if things to bad for you since you are kind of new to the game, but it happens to the best of us.

There is no way you run a 11.1 AF with HKS. I had the HKS 272/272 and ran a 13.5 idle set to 950rpms. And it Idled Fine. I droped the HKS cams and went with the Tomei now i run 14.5 AF at the same rpms and everything is perfect.
