Evo IX AEM locks up
Evo IX AEM locks up
Twice now I have had my AEM completely lock up while downloading the internal log file (but I never have any comm problems doing anything else). It starts out fine and around block 600 it says "ECU Offline". From that point forward it is completely frozen. You can here some kind of buzzing under the hood (not injectors, something back by the firewall it seems) but the car won't start, you can't reconnect with AEMPro, it's totally dead. Only way to fix it is to disconnect the battery. My ECU is serial #063 and I'm really wondering if it is a little flaky. I also have problems with getting stat synch. It will sometimes crank for several seconds before getting that even though I have all the quick start options selected. Also other times when just driving at a constant speed with no change in rpm or load it will act like it shut off for a split second, it's like a major misfire. I wouldn't say I'm a world class tuner, but I have been to the AEM class and have been running an AEM on my Supra for 4 years now without any problems. I've tuned several other types of EMS systems (FAST, DFI, etc.) without any problems so I'm really getting frustrated at how difficult this car has been to tune.
Has anybody else had a flaky Evo IX EMS?

This is the problem when your are using usb to serial adapter on your laptop to connect to ems.You can either get a laptop with serial port or make your logging sessions short with the 50 sample/sec rate.NOTE:Any time it locks up you can reset it by disconneting the battery.
seems odd that a problem would only occur during the downloading of an internal log and yet be flawless all the time with calibration changes, real-time logging, etc.
I am running a USB to serial adapter since my actual PCMCIA $175 serial card recently broke, so I'm not saying it's impossible. It's just a little annoying to have to break out the 10mm and disconnect the battery on the side of the road just to get back home... not to mention losing all your stereo presets, tripmeter, clock and everything else...
Jason, is Henry a real engineer? I have tried calling the normal tech line but their guys seem a bit "scripted" and aren't much help for anything other than the real basics...

I've had the same thing happen to my EVO8, and I use a laptop with a true serial port. This seems to occur when battery voltage is low, or at least that's way it's been in my case. Every time this has occurred the log has been large in size, right after a hard run in which the fans are on high, and the car has cranked weakly afterwards. I have a mini battery which does not have the extended reserve time of a standard sized one.

seems like aem has a lot of problems? Is this just because of the people that are tuning them i mean no offense but i wonder how many problems say ams or bushcur come across with them while tuning them. I want a aem but i dont want it to cause me trouble. Oh yeah and how do u go to aem class like the op said, that sounds like something i would love to do. Can someone shed some more light on that aem class.
