AEM EMS with UEGO or with out ? Differance ? Q

Hi,
I am about to purchase an AEM EMS, there are two different kinds, one with UEGO and with out, $1,850 and $1,350. Can't I just buy a Wide Band O2 sensor for $80 and that would do it ? What is the UEGO option ? Please advise

My Evo

The Uego option is the EMS with a built in controller and it also comes with an O2 sensor. You cannot just plug an O2 sensor into the EMS without a controller. So to buy it seperately would be another 450 to 475 and it would be external(another box to install) instead of it being self contained within the EMS unit.

I believe the EMS can self learn. You set target parameters for the EMS to follow (A/F targets) and it'll learn it. Nobody seems to talk about it much, though.

The 1313U model has the UEGO controller built-in. The only difference is that this locks you into not having a gauge that you can rely on. I recommend using the EMS with an external UEGO controller that has a nice calibrated display of its own that also feeds the EMS an input so the EMS gets the same data. This way you have a display to look at, as well as the EMS having O2 data for closed loop operation and logging.

www.zeitronix.com has a nice display type wideband. The AEM Gauge UEGO is nice too if you want a 52mm round gauge. The only problem with the AEM Gauge UEGO is that it only reads 11-17 AFR, which is sufficient but just barely.

The EMS has a feature called "Automap" which you can use to build a base fuel table. The EMS also has closed loop O2 feedback which can be used to adjust the fuel on the fly to hit a particular AFR target. Both have their uses, but need to be tuned and set up properly first.

Both features require a wideband O2 sensor, which can either be one of the built-in models (1313U), or an external type.

So you can just feed the EMS with a 5v from any external unit and the auto tune software will still work correct? I am guess so it isn't a special plug to feed the 5v into the ems.

I have the PLX Wideband and I am debating the same question but I like the unit I have and they have their own gauges plus it has its own readout as well on the unit.

Thanks in advance.

It isn't as simple as hooking up a wideband and then driving around until the EMS tunes itself...

Yes, you can use any 0-5V wideband unit to feed the EMS a signal. There is a table in the EMS to set up the calibration for the type of wideband you are using.

Yes I have seen several cars running the PLX wideband with the EMS. No Problem there, in fact the EMS has a configuration option to directly support the PLX M-Series.

Doug and I used the autotune feature one day when we were bored and it does work. If done right it will build a conservative map, but nothing to keep. The best thing to do is find a good tuner and pay the money for the tune. It is worth it.

Nice info Black94gsx. The wideband o2 is on my list and you helped me narrow it down.
