Is it just a piece to rest on the carpet mat?

No, it can either be velcro'd or screwd in.

Like Daddymac said, you can use velcro or have it drilled with screws and lock nuts on the reverse side.

Same way any metal logo is fastened to your mat.

I had the same problem in my S2000... My mats are bad but this covers it up and it feels better using the pedals.

I use a $10 transparent plastic car mat from Canadian Tire over the OZ Rally mat. It keeps the mat free from snow, mud and scuffing. And because it's plastic, I can wash it with water. And because it's transparent, it allows the OZ logo from the mat to be still visible.

What would be the purpose of the steel plate? I'm not flaming. I am seriously asking.

Other then the reasons you just mentiond....fashion. Thats it. For the record, the plate WILL NOT cover the Ralliart logo on our mats. I'll make sure of it.
