Cobb AP vs. Vishnu flash for MR
Cobb AP vs. Vishnu flash for MR
I havent found a specific thread battling it out between these two options. I'm really torn between which one to get.
Cobb pros:
versatility, ability to switch maps, remove maps, pull codes/data
Vishnu pros:
higher ADVERTISED horsepower increase than cobb
I'm drawn to the Cobb, but the advertised hp increase with vishnu is more attractive, which is holding me back. I agree that the versatility of the cobb is worth the extra $195, but what about Vishnu's advertised 380bhp (30% increase) vs. Cobb advertised 19.3% increase in HP?
Are the vishnu numbers misleading? I've read in various posts that actual dyno numbers comparing the two are equal. If so, why is there a discrepancy between advertised increase in HP?

Not sure about Cobb AP, but Vishnu reflash also changes some of the TC-SST settings to make it much more driveable in "normal" setting, so that's another plus for Vishnu. If you plan to do other stuff to your car down the line though, maybe you want to get AP since you can retune it for other mods

For my money, I think that the AP is a great way to go- that extra $200 buys you the platform you need to make additional tuning modifications down the line, and you could recover a substantial portion of your investment if you decided to sell the car, or go a different way in the future. Also, if you follow one of the modification paths that Cobb has already mapped for the system, you can safely run those mods with off the shelf maps, vs having to get another reflash from Vishnu, etc.
if Vishnu really makes 10% more power than Cobb, then I'll probably go Vishnu. However, if they're about the same, I'm gonna go for Cobb. I'm just not fully convinced that Vishnu makes that much more power than cobb...

Futher, the Vishnu flash vs a Cobb ap should be a rather one sided thing to decide. Your basing a 1 flash product vs a product that can be flashed multiple times. I'm not knocking shivs product, but if you buy that flash you are locked to him, and have to go back to him if you want to tune that said flash futher.
With the Cobb your pro tuner network is much more plentiful.
As for the power gains I'm not sure I would need to see charts, and numbers, but with the Cobb you have multiple stages to go through before one would require a protune.
Hope this helps.

Agreed on flashing the stock ECU with a tune for your specific car. I'm not a big fan of off the shelf maps. Not a big fan of AP either as it limits your tuning options. Even the local AP authorized tuner doesn't like tuning the AP as it's not consistent on some cars.
I'd say stay away from vishnu, I don't drive a X but take it from a few of the VIII guys about their service. They are great as long as it's a current car. But as soon as it changes, they offer little to no support and you're left with overpriced worthless equiptment. For example my $1000 Vishnu Xede with Smart, aka paper weight.
I've used the Cobb AP on a mazdaspeed 3. Simple to use, quick, actually has software that works. Cobb stuff is top notch. However if you're looking for your best results. go custom dyno tune, only way to really go.
