You're right, it launches really nice on the street off the 5k limiter, spins all 4 tires and everything. However, that's a lot different than trying it on a well prepped launching pad at the drag strip, complete with VHT treatment and rubber from the heavy cars. Driving in first gear at 5k is something like 25MPH, so something has to slip a little at that launch since the car is not going to instantly go 25MPH when the clutch is released. If the tires don't spin (i.e., not enough power/RPMs for a sticking track), then the car will either bog or spin the clutch...well, I guess something could break, but we don't want to talk about that. From my experience with DSM's (AWD Eclipse), a little tire spin made for a perfect lauch. The problem is, on a sticky track it can take a lot of power to get a little tire spin. For a stock EVO on a sticky track, the 5k rev limiter probably won't be enough.

that guy w/ the 2.1 60ft. just didn't know what he was doing.
I guess that's me ...there's really not much to launching off a stutterbox (5k rev limiter): push in the clutch, floor the gas, release the clutch fast enough that it doesn't burn/glaze...maybe I should have let Nate (DSMotorsports) give it a shot launching off the 5k limiter.
I often pulled 1.6x 60' times in my DSM's, which I've been drag racing since 1997, so launching a 4G63 AWD is not a new thing for me. I'm fairly certain folks will find it much easier to launch a stock '05 EVO with the 5k clutch switch disconnected. Funny thing is, once people modify the car 5k might be too high to launch it properly! I know in my 12.0@114MPH GSX, launching at 5k would cause too much wheel spin to get a good start at most drag strips...4k launches worked much better (1.6x 60's with the occasional 1.5X).

what's funny is that the stock 5k limiter can basically be used as launch control. i ran the time in my sig with the car stock, including the stock limiter. you just have to know how to launch it. it's not that hard.
