Post your 40-70 times!! (MPH)

maybe more people will try it here.

i found this test on an rx7 forum(thanks to whomever that is)
i do not have an evo yet or i would post my times

You need a flat straight away preferably one that would allow you to run it both directions so you can average the times to account for wind.

Start by maintaining a steady 35mph in 3rd gear. Floor it!
At 40 mph hit the timer...a stopwatch is fine.
Keep it floored and in 3rd gear.
Stop the timer at 70 mph.
Repeat as neccasary...careful it gets addictivley fun.

I'd be curious to see what mods do compared to stock times.

The Why:
We should'nt use 1/4 mi times as a gauge when talking about mods. The 40-70 mph in 3rd gear test is awesome for gathering test numbers.

It is easy to do and gets rid of launching and shifting vaiables. You can time your car, then do a mod or tune, and retest.

What is wrong with a dyno?
1. I don't have one.
2. This test is free and can be done nearly any time.
3. A dyno can't tell you what weight reduction has done. I get signifigant variance from a full tank and a 1/4 tank.

I think the 40-70 in 3rd gear gives us a cheap ...make that free, simple, and pretty reliable way to compare.

Happy testing.

This list will make no sense unless your mods are listed.

HAPPY TESTING!

The problem:

Modified cars with the bigger turbos will look "slow" with this single gear test. Turbo lag in 3rd gear will simply ruin the test.

Even a stock Evo is going to look slower than it should. Throw in the gear change, an at speed rolling change in the Evo wont hurt things much from driver to driver, unless they are just shifting at the wrong RPM.. in which case.. oh well.

thanks for pointing that out, the different spool characteristics would not provide accurate data.

I still say it's a good test to see what new mods do for your car...untill you come to bigger turbos

Well, one solution to a lot of the turbo lag is starting at 35 mph. So that you're mostly spooled by 40.

But this suggest starting in third gear.

BTW, I tried this w/ my friend in the car (in a very safe area) a couple times for the hell of it. Starting at 35 and flooring it. I averaged 3.1s 40-70. I have an MR w/ MBC set conservatively at 18psi for street and 3" catback. I don't really know how that compares, but 3.2 is better than I thought I'd do. Of course, there's a bit of error because we can't get *exact* 40-70.

Yeah. In my MR, cruising at 40 mph in 3rd gear is about 3800 RPM. So, 35 mph is a bit lower than that. When flooring it in 3rd gear at 35mph, I'm almost fully spooled (in about 1.2s) by the time I hit 40.

i realise that the numbers will not be exact, but say you do it 3-5 times and you can get an average from that.

with stock turbo you should have a problem spooling up though...
but when you upgrade, then lag will of course be increased and then this test my not be as usefull to whom have them.

but again, this is a test that is free, easy, and for the most part close to being somewhat accurate. this test is only to see the inceases in performance as you upgrade(exhaust, cams, intake, etc.)

With an upgraded turbo just do the same thing except 60-90, assuming you have a raised rev limiter. If not try 50-80. I prefer to tune in 4th gear, but have to wait for empty roads and late night for that since I can hit over 120mph.

They have something for what your looking for. 1/4-mile times judge driver skill while your mph will be a good judge of power. Notice how you can manage similar trap speeds while running different ETs. That is the only why you can do this consistantly
