Best cam gear settings for 272's at the stip?
I was just wondering what you guys are running your cam gears at. And laugh if you want, but if your standing at the passenger fender the intake cam is on the left and the exhaust on the right. And if you turn the cam gears to the right that would be advancing them?
Right now mine are turned 3 to the right, and 1 to the right of straight up. So would that be +3,+1?
Most I have read about cam gears and 272's is to run them at -4,-1 or -3,-3. So if Im at +3,+1 that would mean more bottom end and less top end right?
So im hoping that changing these settings will get my mph up some. Im headed to the track this friday and would like to try some different settings. So will changing the cam timing affect your afr's?

I don't know the specifics of how/why it works like this, but my buddy with 272s on his MR has the cam gears set to -4/-1, and he has a lot less low-end/mid-range power, but he has very nice top-end power as proven on the dyno. With these settings, he was able to trap 113.9 on pump gas the same night I hit my 12.01 and trapped 113.7 on race gas. Now, I don't have cams, but he still outrapped me despite being an inexperienced drag racer. He only hit a 12.6, but nailed right at 114mph on pump, which I think is a testament to the -4/-1 setting at the dragstrip. This was also at normal street boost of 21psi. We look forward to tossing in some race gas, cranking the boost, and leaning out the SAFC to see if he can hit 117mph. You can probably do the same with -4/-1 on the cam gears...
You would turn the cam to the left 4 clicks before 0 and 1 click before 0 looking from the passenger side. Just imagine you are looking at a number line.

I thought you needed some kind of tool to measure cam gears, or the dyno in order to just "turn the Gear" without taking a chance of damage. Or are cars for cam gear timing the same for all evos where as the tune is different for every car. Cause I am about to put in cam gears next week but was going to leave them at 0 0.

I haven't had time to experiment with other cam gear setting other than 0/0 and -4/-1 and the retarted settings seem to make significant high rpm gains.
