Launched my car today, felt VERY different.

Today I decided to launch my car on my way home, just for fun. I hadn't launched my car since my last trip to GLD which was a month or two ago.

I have experience at the track, I know how to drive stick and I DO NOT burn up clutches.

Today, I revved up no different from how I ussually would launch and when I totally released the clutch it decided to start slipping pretty hard. (basically, none of my power was actually being transferred to the tires which was from clutch slip. It felt like I was spinning tires without spinning them whatsoever.

I eased off of the throttle a little to give the clutch a break and continued ripping around.

My question is why did it all of a sudden start slipping so hard on a launch? Is it the cold weather?

Also, Is this a sign that my clutch is already going? Are you guys experiencing the same crap when trying to launch? Is this normal?

All I have is a cone filter and an airbox I built so I doubt I'm making any more power than stock.

Im still glad the clutch took the shock over the TC, but the car only has 6500 miles on it and about 10-15 launches.

Thanks

If you clutch is going, you will feel it slip in the higher gears first.

If your clutch was still really cold, that may account for it. If it was warmed up, then its not good.

17 with an 05 Evo and asking questions like this? You are a disaster waiting to happen. I will not answer how to launch, because I don't want you to ever try. This has also been asked/answered MANY, MANY times, so you need to learn how to search.

That leads me to your other question about the 5th gear grind. That, too, is an extremely common problem that you would have known about if you had searched. Please, learn a few things right now before getting off on the wrong foot:

1) Don't jack threads like this. Stay on topic.

2) Don't ask questions without searching first.

I did 2 threads recently that referenced almost all of the TSBs and Recalls for 03-05 Evos. One of those TSBs is for the 5th gear synchro, but it's only for 03-04s. 05s don't normally get the 5th gear grind due to improvements, and you definitely shouldn't get it with only 3500 miles. You should take the TSB for the 5th gear synchro grind along with you and your car to the dealership and tell them about it. They will need to go out and reproduce it to see that there's a problem. They should then fix it under warranty with no questions asked if there really is a problem.

Boltz, I think it was just cold. Go test it in top gear with a roll-on to boost from 2500rpm. If it doesn't slip, you're fine.

I had been driving the car for about 25 mins, so that could possibly be it. I know the motor was warmed up, Im just not sure that the clutch disk/flywheel were.

I'll go do a run uphill in top gear to see if it slips.

Once when I was driving the car 100% stock and going up a hill in either third or fourth (can't remember) I gave it gas and the turbo started to make the usual noises except I wasn't accelerating. It was literally just sitting at 4k for about 2 seconds, so I let off and was thinking it was a boost leak. I tried one last run before heading onto my street to confirm the leak but this time it pulled just as hard as it ussually does. These Evo's are weird.

He said he only has an air filter and a homemade airbox, so he's basically stock.

The clutch is junk. Mine started to slip on launches before it lost complete control in any other gears. Drive it real nice until you can get a new one
