R-compounds are not for drag launches. They have stiff sidewalls that resist rolling over while cornering. You need drag radials for drag racing. If those don't work, then go with slicks.

Then I'd suggest some Drag Radials like the NITTO 555R. I used to run those on my '91 GS-T, and I cut 1.9s regularly with a best of 1.81. On that 1.81 60', I ran a 12.58@110, so take that for what it's worth.

Ok.

When you say R-Compounds, that is referring to autocrossing or road racing tires that have a STIFF SIDEWALL to reduce rollover.

When you say Drag Radials, that is referring to drag racing tires with a SOFT SIDEWALL that allow the tires to flex.

You can go ahead and get R-compounds if you want, but they will not be good for drag racing and they will wear out in a few thousand miles.

ok i think there is some misunderstanding here. my goal is to keep street tires (i have slicks for my trans am) on my vehicle. i want to get the best possable launch without having to switch out wheels EVER. besides id use the bfg r compound before id use the nittos. they hook up much better. the nitto 555r are the drag radials and the nitto 555r2 are the road race tires both of which are made of the same r compound.

Then why are you asking us these questions? You already know what you want and need, and you know so much about what tires are made of. I already told you that I hit consistent 1.9s and a best of 1.81 on my FWD Eclipse GS-T, but if you think the BFG "r compound" is better, then get those. Come back and show us your 1.7 60's on BFG R compounds. Why is this so difficult?

All technicalities aside, referring to Drag Radials as R compounds is just dumb. So what if they are made of the same material? The tires are radically different and drag radials are not referred to as R compounds. When you say R compounds, that is referring to a road racing or autocrossing tire with stiff walls. So, you can continue to harp the fact that drag radials are made of the same material, or you can drop it and start focusing on actually getting a tire that suits your needs.

If your trying to improve your launch on a fwd car w/o switching tires... that's almost not worth the time/money. I suggest the Mickey Thompson drag radials first, everything else is just sub par. Motor mounts are a waste of time to improve a launch... I would start off with a drag alignment, lighter rims, maybe a coilover setup for drag, other than that it's just best to go with a better tire.
