275 hp spinning off the line?

Hey guys, just took my 03' out to the track.

Car is almost stock, maf adapter/filter, cat-back and a custom AMS flash (275 whp).

I set my launch rev limiter at 5600 after reading through launching threads, but I'm just spinning my wheels on the launch, bogging, and making 14.x passes .

I know the 03's dont have the front LSD, but I really didnt think it would be this bad.

I'm currently on 245/45/17 Falken RT-615's with good tread. What air pressure do you guys suggest running at the track? I only got 2 passes and did not think to drop the pressure from 30ish (which might have been my problem).

Anyway, let me know your thoughts, just never heard of stockish evo spinning wheels like that off launch. Thanks

maybe you got one of those "FWD Evos" lol.. j/k.... you really shouldnt have so much spin w/ AWD.. ?or maybe it is just the lack of a front LSD? if so, try it w/ a lil less tire pressure in front and leave the rear how it is?? or you need more time at the track?? i duno.. good luck..

I definitely need more time at the track !

However I'm still not sure why I was spinning other than tire pressure. Hope that's all it is

Dude I have an 03 with an upgraded LSD in the front too.....and I am making 284 whp 290 wtq on mustang dyno. My tires spin also but once I let off the clutch and hammer the gas they spin for maybe the first 2/3 feet and then I rocket off and have to shift into second gear quickly. The reason you are boggin is that your not giving it enough gas on your launch.... and your rpms are falling too quickly. What RPM are you launching at? Let the clutch out until enngagement, then hit 5500 rpm or so and when green hits, sidestep the clutch and hit the gas hard! You should not bog at his point....but you will spin.

Now others I see nurse the clutch and slip it a bit more and don't spin as much....but that's not my technique...but it works. Good Luck. My best pass is in my sig.

Well, as I said I'm launching off a 5600 launch limiter, not sidestepping but pulling my foot off the clutch as quickly as possible. I would not say that I am babying anything, clutch least of all

Wheels only spin for a couple feet, but its enough time to bog my launch :/

Should I have to launch higher than 5600?

Edit: nice pass !

I'm surprised that if you're wheels are spinning that the motor is bogging. Maybe you need to raise your 2-step to 5800-5900 if you're bogging off the clutch engagement.

i,d rather spin 2- 3 feet on the launch and get into the boost quicker than bog.(makes sense).

No my friend I wasn't talking about you when I said others baby the clutch.... I simply meant I have seen other evo guys launch with hardly no tires spin and pull off nice passes. AFter having spoken to them...I was told they all do a quick slip or something like that.

Like the other guy said.....raise the 2step a bit and keep practicing! nGood luck!

flevo8 - please write (or post) your time slips. And what RPM where you shifting at?

Basically, sounds like you dont have launching down yet. And may be shifting too high (out of the powerband). Which is fine - just need some more seat time. 2x down the track is not enough to get it right.

When playing with tire pressure - its best to only go in +/- 2 psi at a time. Look to your 60' for where to go on that and also feel. Too much grip or too little air can have negative results.

Could also have been track prep. I have experienced this on tracks that are heavily prepped for high hp rwd (tiretack). I spun, got stuck in the velcro, bogged.

5500 should be ok. I use the stock 5k and my best 60' is 1.61, usually I am around 1.62-1.65.

EDIT: Here is a link to my 2step tech.

I had the same thing happen to me this year and it ended up being a combo of things. First of all with the open front diff. keep your tire pressure higher in front then in back. When you launch your weight transfers to the rear so lower pressure gives you more bite.

Also your track prep has alot to do with it. If they have it prepped with alot of VHT and your car isnt setup right it will do just as you described. You'll get a decent launch with some spin and then it will bog HARD! Only real thing you can do then is put your tire pressure higher and raise your launch limiter so you get more spin and pull through the VHT.

Post up your numbers from your rund if you can.

if it bogs after spinning sounds like your easing off the gas too much after to slow the spinning...

keep it floored til the car starts moving faster, then let off just a littttttle bit when u feel it starting to grip put it back down...

are you going thru the water box? try to go around it...

cheers!

Thanks for all the replies, I'll try to find one of my times later but they were in the mid-high 14's. like 2-2.1 60' times :/

I absolutely do not have my launch or shifting technique mastered, but I was still very surprised to be spinning like that.

It was at the Bradenton track in Florida if anyones familiar. There were 2 other evo's there that day and a couple STi's and nobody else really seemed to have an issue.

On the second pass I had the car at 5600 RPM (boost gauge bouncing between 5-8 psi) pulled my foot straight off the clutch quickly and I thought my clutch slipped because of the way the RPM's went, so I probably did take my foot off the gas a little too much. It wasn't until I talked to some friends afterwards that they told me I was spinning the front wheels.

Can't wait to get back out there and try again.

Two things happened there - 1, there is a restrictor pill in the clutch line that restricts the fluid. So when you tried to dump the clutch, it didnt let you do it. The pill slowed the fluid down and maked the clutch slip. 2, that is not great for the drivetrain. Launching isnt great for the car, but done wrong hurts much more than done right.

Good luck and happy racing.
