To wet the tires or not (at the drag strip)

Should I run my tires through the water box (burnout box) before staging? I know with my front wheel Drive Honda I got the best times when I rev'd up the car to get wheelspin. If we can can get more wheelspin on the Evo--do you think it will put less strain on the drivetrain(clutch, etc.) while launching--or will be lose precious 60' time?

I personally would not run through the water. Gets your car dirty.....j/k, with the AWD its not needed. IMO

This is a good question. I suspect you will launch equally hard with wet tires and probably be easier on the clutch because you will be able to get the tires spinning. It probably would be a bad thing if you have a lot of mods and actually need the dry traction.

I'm interested in knowing how this turns out. Try it both ways and tell us what happens.

Unless you are running on slicks, don't get near the water box.

The water box is for cars on slicks only. Some tracks only allow cars on slicks in the water box.

The following paragraph can be found several places on the 'net:

Go around the water box. Do a short burnout to get the dirt off of your tires and heat them up a bit. Hold the brake with your left foot, and goose it with your right for a couple of seconds. You don't want to get near the water. It will run in your tread, be thrown into your wheelwell, and drip on your tires and the track the whole run. This is very dangerous for the "Big Boys" running slicks behind you, and could get you removed from the track. Also, dont do your burnout in the water, as it tends to throw water all over everyone and everything within 50 yards of the starting line! The car in line behind you will be very annoyed.
(Note that if you are in an Evo, you shouldn't even try to do a stationary burnout -- not a good idea...)

If the track allows you to do it, DO IT. Tracks like Atco Raceway force you to go through the 'water box' just by how the track is set up.

Getting more wheelspin on theEvo will put less strain on the drivetrain. The more grip you get, the more strain you get/have. Yes, wheelspin will cost you in your 60' time but so will a bog from to much grip. If you can get lots of grip without bogging, that will be excellent but you risk more strain on your drivetrain. More wheelspin is less strain on the drivetrain but may cost you with your 60' time being slightly worse. Oh...what to do! Those are your choices!

His drivetrain and/or clutch will be 'shot' if it can't sustain the abuse of an AWD launch. If his drivetrain and clutch can withstand a drag strip launch, then by all means don't go through the water box. It would be pointless.

Otherwise either go through the waterbox (if the track allows it without doing a burnout) or don't drag race your car at all.

My experience with this in my Subaru was to go through the waterbox if you have no choice (Atco Raceway) but do it slowly and get those tires wet. Otherwise, I never went out of my way to go through the water if I didn't have to (like at Englishtown Raceway, M.I.R, Cecil County, etc). My 60ft times weren't all that much different....maybe .1 - .13 worse or so.

ogdelsol, To me it seems like you are concerned about your tranny and no-one here is going to cough up the $$$ to help you pay for it if something goes awry. Don't chance it and go through the waterbox if you can. Your tranny and clutch will thank you for it. And BTW: I'm not suggesting you do a burnout in the waterbox. Lol! Just go through it (if it's allowed without doing a burnout) to wet the tires so you don't kill your tranny/clutch.
Good luck!
