Need for Speed: My Journey to 10's

Hi everyone, did my first few runs ever on my mostly stock 9 mr last week and it was a lot of fun and addicting . My mods are K N drop in, HKS EVC 6 set at 21 psi, tuned to 93 octane.

Just installed my Trust TI-R cat back today. Will be getting my Mil. Spec 100 cell bolt on cat sometime this week. I'll be going back to the track in a couple more days and would like some advice on turning up more boost.

I searched different threads and came up with 23-25 psi on stock turbo tuned, and high numbers like 27-29 psi. I want to know if I can turn up the boost to those numbers if my car was tuned differently before ex. on less psi and octane fuel. I have 12 gallons of VP 109 to mix with pump gas and was considering 98-100 octane for 23-25 psi and straight 109 for 27 psi. Any chances I'll detonate? Thanks in advance.

Here are my times, which are comparable to bone stock .

Run # 1

rt .5079
60 ft 1.7839
330 ft 5.4693
ET @ 594ft 7.9730
1/8 ET 8.5361
1/8 MPH 79.92
1/4 ET 13.3690
1/4 MPH 102.27

Run # 2

rt .4679
60 ft 1.7811
330 ft 5.4022
ET @ 594ft 7.8911
1/8 ET 8.4511
1/8 MPH 80.35
1/4 ET 13.2230
1/4 MPH 103.41

Run #3

rt .1489
60 ft 1.7789
330 ft 5.3661
ET @ 594ft 7.8790
1/8 ET 8.4202
1/8 MPH 83.14
1/4 ET 13.2402
1/4 MPH 103.22

A tuned IX @ 21psi is not comparable to stock. That's 30 or more WHP over stock unless it's not a good tune. The driving is not bad, but the car is slower than most stock IXs (no tune and no EBC).

You can run high boost on race gas - just be sure to get tuned for that boost level and octane.

Just like what Wartalon said please be sure to take the appropriate steps before cranking up the boost pressure and dumping in race gas.

If you ever need anything feel free to hit up the guys at www.fftec.com.

We are in Union City and bit of a drive but well worth it.

By the way if you're interested in checking some of us local guys out we'll be at Infineon this Wed Night.

Thanks for the advice Warrtalon, Patrick. I guess I'm stuck with 21 psi for my next run until next year since the track will be closing at the end of this week for winter. At first I was tempted to use race fuel but I guess there's more to it. Glad I double checked with you guys. Will get a new tune for ~25psi max once I install all my basic parts.

By the way I'm living in Alaska right now. I forgot to change my profile when I create it while in Sacramento. I usually go down there and stay with my bro for a few months to get away from the winter. Planning to move down there soon. Will definitely hit you guys up.

Are you at high altitude by chance in Alaska?

No, the race track is probably around 20-50ft above sea level. Temperature was about 50 degrees. I shifted at 7000rpm +/- 100 and stayed pass 7100 in 4th for 2-3 seconds resisting the urge to up shift. Don't know if that's bad or not for my times and engine.

Going to the track tonight to see if I can improve my times with my new cat-back and
100 cell cat. Wish I had more time so I could install my 255 Walboro and intake and get tuned for it. Will have to wait for next year .

You wouldn't be at high rpm in 4th with those traps anyway, so nah. You don't shift to 5th until you're trapping high 1-teens.

Made it into the 12's

Made my runs yesterday after installing the 100 cell cat and cat-back. I improved a little on my times but wasn't really feeling it after getting pulled over on my way to the track.

Anyway do foul times count ( crossing my fingers)? And on my last couple of runs I went all the way to 8,000 rpm on 4th which I shouldn't have done. Please tell me I didn't mess something up. It's just that the car kept on wanting to go and I didn't want to shift to 5th right before the line comes to an end.

109+90/2 = 99.5. Good fuel you used, but 21psi is very low for race gas, so that's why you're not getting much out of it. That 108 at the end looks like an anomaly, but those 106s are good for 12.7s if you can nail the launch/shifts.

Don't worry about the red lights they have no effect on ET/MPH.

Once the tree is activated you can leave right away or plenty later after the green when not in competition that is.

Take your time on TNT nights etc to get yourself prepared to make the run and to focus on the task at hand........try to never feel rushed when staging/launching the car.

Touching 8k should be ok if just for a brief moment and not done habitually unles you feel like rolling the dice.

The 1.79 60ft looks promising.....keep on practicing!

Thanks, I feel much better now.

Off topic, just heard from a lot of people that our governor, Sarah Palin, was chosen as John Mcain's running mate. I thought they were bsing me, her only being our first female governor and with just 2 years in office. She lives a few miles away from the track. Maybe I should go say hi before she becomes really famous .

This is the lady who came over to my house a couple years ago for my autograph .
Very friendly and down to earth.
