Mickey Thompson 17" Bias-Ply Drag Slick for Evolutions, etc.
Mickey Thompson 17" Bias-Ply Drag Slick for Evolutions, etc.
It has come to Mickey Thompson Tires' attention that there is a need for a Bias-Ply, Drag Slick-type (Non-DOT approved) tire for the Mitsubishi Evolution Community (as well as other communities) which will mount safely onto the OE 17" wheel and will not require significant fenderwell modification to fit on the vehicle.
Mickey Thompson Tires has been offering Part # 3221, 26.0/7.0-17 (25.7/7.4-17) ET Drag Motorcycle Tire for more than ten years. Mickey Thompson Tires produced this tire to be used solely on wheels with an "MT Contour" bead-seat (i.e. Motorcycle Wheel). The common Automotive Wheel uses a "J (ISO) Contour" bead-seat which has a different profile from the "MT Contour"; therefore it is unsafe to mount or use the 3221, 26.0/7.0-17 ET Drag Motorcycle Tire on a Automotive, J (ISO) Contour style wheel.
The reason that we feel there is a need for a Bias-Ply, Drag Slick-type tire rather than a Radial-Ply, Drag Slick-type tire for the Evolution Community is that when the Clutch is released when launching a car, the force inflicted on the tire typically shocks the sidewall of the tire much more than with a Automatic (Converter equipped) application. With a Radial-Ply Drag Slick-type tire, the Radial construction makes the sidewall stiff and does not allow the sidewall to absorb shock which with a Clutch-equipped car will usually cause the car to wheel-hop or spin on launch. With a Bias-Ply Drag Slick-type tire there is a certain amount of flex that is allowed to occur in the sidewall which helps to absorb a lot of the shock that is inflicted on a tire at launch.
Mickey Thompson Tires has done quite a bit of research on a tire for the Evolution Community however your thoughts are a key component of the process to gather market intelligence.
Would an Automotive version of our current 26.0/7.0-17 ET Drag Motorcycle tire be acceptable?
What if the tire was approximately 1" wider?
How many are interested in a product like this?
We look forward to hearing your thoughts,
Ben Anderson

i drag race from time to time so a set of these for the track would be perfect!
+1 for the 26x8-17 and the 26x8-16 for those running 16" wheels over the factory brembos
I've been running M/T tires for years on my chevys, this is great news that you are thinking about steping up and making us a good tire for the evo now!

Nice to see you over here and thanks for talking with me about this project!!
Yes, as we discussed, I am all for a 26x8/8.5x17" tire! I can't wait as a matter of fact!
Looking forward to a lot of feedback in this thread so we can make a bad *** tire FINALLY be a reality for the EVO's/DSM's/Subaru's and list of others!

I'm interested for my STi and a few of my friends in Evos I know would live this. I'd like to see a proto and maybe Buschur can test it and see how well it performs. Logically it seems as though it would be able to significantly increase 60s on a car that can already tear it up. Thank you MT for considering us

M/T, hope you're ready. This thread is about to blow up. We've been waiting on a 17" slick since 2003. Hope this will come true by spring...... again thanks for considering our community.
