Limiting damage on street tires

I should start by saying I very rarely drag race. I took my car to see what it would do with 400+ whp last year, launched once at OEM 2-step RPM on street tires (without lowering tire pressure) and promply cracked my 6-speed housing clean in half.

The wheel hop was that bad. And maybe something was installed wrong, I dunno. With an even better tune now (and a built 5-speed) I wouldn't mind seeing what it traps with a good run before winter gets here. I want to make sure I learned from my mistakes though. I have two tire choices when I go:

- Bridgestone RE01Rs (summer setup)
- Dunlop SP Winter Sport 3Ds (winter setup)

I destroyed the 6-speed on the RE01Rs at street tire pressure. Assuming I lower tire pressure, would the winter tires be more forgiving because of less stiff sidewall and less grip? In theory I want to spin through 1st to minimize potential damage, right? What should I lower tire pressure to? Any other tips? Thanks guys.

i used to drag race with my M3 Winters too sometimes until i got my BFGs....

Do expect real traction... I couldn't get a decent 60ft no matter what... I was always in the 1.8-1.9 range...

Put the pressure down to 25psi and then start lowering it... Personally i would really bother because i knew that whatever i would do nothing really would change...

example launches on the M3 winter...

Thanks. I know this seems like a stupid thread. Just trying to avoid a repeat of last year if I can.

Also what RPM for 2-step?

You want to get softer sidewall tires to absorb some of the shock

Well RPM al depends on the turbo... if you are still on the stock turbo i would start with a 2-step at 5850rpm and go from there...

I am not sure the strenght difference of the 6 speed vs the 5 speed in terms of launching the car... It sounds that you were unlucky because i have seen mayne people drag racing their 6sp with success...
