I tried holding at a certain RPM but no boost...so it just bogs...bad!

yeah, i'm new to stick and driving the Evolution. I just got back from the track today here are the results.

1st: I dropped it at 3500 and ended up getting a 14.6
2nd: I dropped it from 5k, but messed up the gearing completely and got a 15.3
3rd: dropped it again at 5k and didn't mess up too much, i guess, and got 13.9
I want to get a short shifter and do a few things to help be faster.
(btw, its my first time at the track ever.)
needless to say my friend in his ol' corvette was getting 12's all day
made me cry.
