5th gear

For you guys that are running very low 12s and 11sec runs. Are you shifting to 5th? I'm curious cause i'm going through in the 108-110mph barrier right now. I have 3more mods on doing this year that will net me 11s and was wondering if you hit 5th or keep it in 4th longer. I know the shift to 5th can be quite difficult sometimes. I have a short shifter with all the bushings installed so its a lot easier than with the stock shifter.

Yea, I know a few guys that have to do this and from what I hear it's not that bad, some try to get higher in the rpms so they don't have to. I guess it just depends on your setup.

If you have the cash and want the absolute best drag setup you should look into stronger internals, bigger turbo, high lift and duration (think piper, tomei, jun) cams and the required valve springs/retainers,etc. Then you should be able to hit 9k+ RPM and avoid the shift and lower acceleration of 5th. If you dont have the money for all that, just accept the slightly less et/mph and enjoy the money you saved.

My 2 cents

wow quick replies. thanks guys!
if i dont' want to shift (thinking from a safety stand point) get the more expensive cams (the one's that are proven) and the supporting pieces (springs, retainers etc).
but for money purposes get the cams and shift. thats probably what i'll do. i love my car too much to see the little 4g63 blow its self to a couple of pieces more than one

I do 11 second passes and cannot finish the quarter without getting into 5th. Yesterday i did a 11.3@125mph. 5th gear really is lazy.
I'm thinking about re-building my gearbox with better ratios. I think turbotrix does this.
