B&M shifter problems
B&M shifter problems
hey guys i got a problem after inistalling my B&M shifter.. first off i got the new adjustable one w/ bushings and counterweight.. all of this is included! its B&M part # 45186. (you can adjust the throw 45% or 15% and you can adjust the angle of the shifter too)
We after installing the shifter i noticed it s a pain to get it into 3rd 4th, 5th, and Reverse.. as now the shifter is really tight and I have to "guide" it into the correct gear and sometimes i miss gear shifts entirely.. I know this cant be right and i screwed up somewhere in the install.. as i have to guide the lever into the right gear i think something is wrong in the shifters "centering" mechanism..
as tommorow im gonna recheck everything anyone have any pointers to look at?

I do not know if this is the same as my old car. But, look to make sure the spring or centering mechanism is in place. Also, is there enough lube in the right places to allow free movement of the shifter. These are the only things I can think of.
yeah i think its the centering spring thats causing the problem.. i check the installs on this forum and i cant seem to find a pic of the centering spring and its position.. i also check the shop manual and it doesnt show you its position.. if anyone knows please let me know...
thanks

i just installed the the adjustable shifter the other day. i had the same problems. i adjusted to 45% and cut the square also. but to make it work i got a hammer and "dimpled" the areas where the shifter rod was touching the chassis. after that shifting was very precise and it got rid of some grinding issues i had.

I just installed mine today. I have no issues at all.
How did you set up the spring?
Did the rod go all the way through?
Do you have the spring split top and bottom?
Did you install the spacer under or over the base?
Did you cut the hole all the way through tho the top?
Let me know, I am happy to help via PM or phone.

thanks for responding.. i fixed the problem..what i did:
made the upper arm of the centering spring "thicker" by cutting the closed end of a vaccum cap i had laying around and slid it on the "arm" so it put resistence on it to help center the shifter! after driving a little bit today it feels much better..
If anyone has this problem shifting then try this fix, it should fix your problem!
