How much does the Contour weigh? At 2700 lb, the lancer is a little porky itself. Hence the reason I hopped into someone's 1800 lb Suzuki for the upcoming season instead.

My best friends SVT suffered 5 broken transmissions before Ford finally bought it back VIA the CA lemon law.

As far as interior, I drove a standard 98 Contour at work for a year. It had 60k miles, and was a real POS. Everything was falling off or sagging. A-typical American craftsmanship...JUNK!

Thats so true, it seems like the american cars fall apart easily. I have 65k on my lancer and nothing has done that in or outside of my car. The majority of american cars can be thrown away after 60k! Oh well that sucks

My '89 Taurus GL was at 145k when I sold it, and the only repairs it had needed were radiator/head gasket (thanks to me driving with no coolant in July) and the air conditioner compressor. I think the American 4 bangers tend to fall apart more easily than the V6 and larger sedans.

Yes but the '89 GL did not have the yamaha engine in it. All SHO's used the yamaha engines. As far as american 4 bangers, you are right.

yeah, I had a 3.8 V6 in that Taurus, just enough power to get things done. Ugly car, but hey, it was a free hand-me-down from my mom when I turned 16.

And on a slightly tangent note, the manual SHO is legal for STS because it is under 3.1 liters, while the auto has a 3.2 (correct me if I'm wrong)

I would rather get a used Sentra SE-R.

Just better car than SVT Contour. They're nice but nice in that 90's way.

My question, does anyone know the long term reliabilty of the 2.5 duratec svt V-6?
I used to own a 98 SVT Contour and a friend of mine owns a 98 SVT Contour now. There are a few issues w/ them like:

1. Harmonic balancer does not like the engine at redline for a long time
2. Oil starvation on hard rights (i.e. track driving)
3. Make sure the service on the car was kept up

I loved my SVT but it was a lease so I had to give it back. I still want one for daily driving but I think I am going to get a SUV (booooo!!!)

Try your darndest to track down a '99 where they got rid of most of the problems.
