if im right..it is aka double clutching...when going to down shift from say 4 to 3..you push in the clutch and rev to say 3k-4k and then let out to match the revs of the lower gear to get a smoother transition...

Go buy yourself some Option videos, some Best Motoring vidz. They show the footwork of the driver while he is attacking the road courses.

Rev matching isn't quite the same as double clutching. When you double clutch, you clutch in, put it into neutral, clutch out, step on the gas and match the revs, clutch in, and downshift. Hence the name "double clutch".

Revmatching allows for a smoother downshift and also prolongs the life of your clutch.

WTF? okay rev matching is anytime you are changing gears (down or up) you should reconize how many RPM's youre transmission forces you're engine to change RPM's.....

so lets say you are in 3rd gear (at 3k rpm's) and you shift into second (this will increase you rpm generally 1k) so to accomidate you need to...

1. put the clutch in
2. press the gas to 4k rpm's, and hold it there
3.shift into second
4.release clutch..and ride away smothly into the sunset
(this can also be done up -shifting by reducing engine RPM's).

with driving experience you might oneday pick up on this technique...so IMO criticize you'reself

it puts less stress on your transmission/syncros/clutch and if your, but if your good at it no stress will be applied.

Is't Double Clutching done in second or first gear, because you can't downshift. I believe double clutching is just pushing in the clutch reving high and then popping the clutch soo you take off. But in 3rd gear you would do that as your downshifting into 2 gear. But if you are in second geear you can't drop to first, so you have to double clutch if the car isn't going fast enough.

Nope. Kev's post above is a good description of double-clutching a downshift.

I only use double-clutching on my upshift from 4th to 5th. Even on the track (road courses). At about 20k miles I started feeling that notorious grind when shifting to 5th. The double-clutch usually gives me a buttery-smooth engagement, and now at 50k miles the trans feels no worse than it did at 20k.

My upshift works like Kev describes for the downshift, except that I don't rev while in neutral. It took some concentration when I first started doing it, but now it's a reflex and I fine myself doing it unnecessarily in my Maxima.

edit: found a thread further below about double-clutching. The moderator's comments are priceless: https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sh...d.php?t=165808

^ you actually double clutch going up?? but the RPMS are dropping and there's really no need to double clutch unless you're going from one set of synchros to the next (at least for the WRX and GT tranny, it's 1-2 shares one synchro and 3-4 shares one)...

Rev matching or double clutching is a waste of time when you're attempting the quarter mile. Let's say you take 1st to 7000 rpm, well if you do the gear math, that MPH in RPMs is ~ 5100. So what are you going to do, put the clutch in and let it die to 5100 rpm then release ? haha! you'll lose .5 seconds (i did this just to see what would happen).. on the other hand, double clutching will bring your rpm's down more to match, but you're still wasting time. that is double clutching to the upshift just to increase the lag and help the synchros... not keep the turbo spooling .... just don't work.. for me anyway..

Now, if you shift as fast as you can, sometimes the car bounces a little (which costs you time) sometimes it'll go in smooth if you release the clutch just right, but this is all done very quickly. How many of you when shifting from 1st to 2nd, bounce the car ? I hate when that happens, costs you time...

it also could be a sign of the clutch not grabbing that well and slipping a little .. hence.. the bounce

Sometimes I have a problem with 1st to 2nd.. sometimes it just doesn't go in that smooth, esp. shifting over 7000 rpm, and i have to shift slower with the clutch fully depressed. 2nd to 3rd, and 3rd to 4th i can just powershift...
