I never saw a graph, but you can feel that the most power is between 5000 and 5700. the powerband definately doesn't start untill like 3800. So if you want to feel out your car go to the highway, put your car in third gear, drop down to 2000 rpm's and hit the gas until you hit the revlimiter. then make your own decision about your shift points.

The rev limited is at 6,250. If you reflexes are that slow, I'm sorry but you shouldn't be driving a manual trans car.

We're not looking just for peaks though, we're looking to see the curves themselves to see dropoffs and shape.

Ive had my car at the track like 10 times and my best ET's are at redline shifts. And with a rev limiter at 6300 you can hit it all you like without really worrying to much.

When I shift at 5000, I sure as hell don't drop all the way down to 2500! A gear change for me reduces RPM by no more than 2000 each time. Maybe my car's messed up, but 70 in 4th is 4200 and 70 in 5th is 3000.

I'm not doubting your times, but I find that riding out to the limiter just feels slower, but maybe it has something to do with the power drop from the RRM intake.

I'm already losing plenty of low down from the intake, but I make it up at 5000+. It just seems to go away after 5500.

My rev limiter kicks at about 63, 64. if you know your car you can push in the clutch the moment before it hits. When shifting to 2nd you still get a dead spot. I understand that you shouldn't hit the red with your turbo Hobie, but were talking about a stock car.

1-2 big drop, 2-3 about 3000 rpm, 3-4 is only about 2000 rpm. now if you agree then remember torque gets you off the line, and hp gains speed. Look at a 99 civic si(I hate hondas) no torque, plenty of HP running high 15's stock. you need the higher rpm horse (in stock form) to finish the race in front

I know I might be confusing the situation but the reason I suggest not bouncing off the limiter is that right now with my car modified it seems to shoot up to that 6250 rpm when I get anywhere near 6K.

True it's much different from stock when I did not have that problem but 1st to 2nd gear can be tricky. If you miss shift at 1st it takes a lot of skill to catch anyone before the end of the 1/4. And when it was stock I found there was a big bottle neck after 5800rpm when the car seemed to choke up and feel less powerful.

On the RMR website, AEM posted a baseline dyno in regards to the gains associated with their CAI.

This will definitely put an end to this shift point disucssion.

in that case, my butt dyno was terribly mistaken when my Lancer was stock, and I'd suggest shifting around 5500. Also, I don't think there is much risk in going all the way to the rev limiter, that's the reason it's put there, to keep you safe. Granted, you sholdn't be riding it all the way down the highway. Like the others mentioned, just ping off of it if you plan on going that high. I did it a few times in autocross when I'd be at redline for so short before the next turn that shifting was pointless.

there is definatly no reason to take the lancer up to rev limiter or even redline... i would definatly shift around 57-5800 if i remember right... that is where the graph starts to taper and drop off.

So it may peak at around 5700~5800 but that's NOT your shift point. You have to think about power output before vs after each shift.

I recommend shifting right around 6K... or just shy of it. That does a good job with your gear ratios of dropping you to around 3200 rpms after each shift which keeps in you a decent power band...

Here is a "simulated" 1/4 mile run on the dyno.. you can actually get approximate gear ratios from this based on knowing that my peak torque in 3rd gear which is a nearly 1:1 gear is about 93 ft-lbs then just figure out the multipliers based on my other torques.

The spikes you see in the graph is from the over-rev as I was shifting by keeping the gas half way down on each shift as I ran through the gears for the 1/4. I also was a little taken aback in first gear as my car lurched up out of the dyno wells onto the front rollers... so I hesitated for gear 2 .. which you can see as well :-)

Good to see that my 40 dollars spent was a good investment for knowledge for us all as far as a dyno! :-)

1/4 Mile simulation (actual 1/4 mile time was ~17.2 I believe.. under 18 I know for sure.):

I was shifting at about 5900 rpms I think during this run... and you can see that my torque and hp were both pretty good after each shift.. and all the way to the end of each gear... so that means the points were good for shifting.. stayed nice and flat.

Yeah but from your 1st to 2nd shift, an extra 300rpm definitely wouldn't hurt your time.

oh yeah... I agree completely... but you want to shift about 100 before rev limit so that you dont' risk bouncing off of it.. that'll hurt your time a bit... but I could have gone to 6K or 6100 and it would have been good... I think on my first run I did go to 6K as I was watching the rpms... but the second one I was concentrating on feel and not on visual.. so shorted them somewhat.
