Case study # 17 - new '05 MR !!

Interesting that the wastegate is the same and o2 housing
I think I will have to order up some '05 turbo parts tomorrow and do some experimentation !

MalibuJack has the '05 compressor cover and has already stated the differences are hardly visable. The outlet was slightly larger but I have not seen any measurements yet. He's supposed to report back.

I am very interested to get a car with head studs and race fuel and see how much boost it can hold with the boost controller all the way down
Just a quick note.. there are some slight differences, internally the volume is slightly larger, the "Slot" for the scroll from the impeller is larger by about 1mm (approx, its too tight to get a caliper in there) and its interior volume is a little larger..
I just aquired another CHRA (titanium cart) so I can compare a TD05HRA-16G6-9.8t and this "Hybrid" consisting of a 05 Compressor cover, CHRA, and 10.5t housing (old style flapper)
I have to agree, individually the gains of just the housing, or just the compressor cover are decent, but not a mindblowing change, my guess is because its slight mismatch.. I think the two together will offer pretty significant gains. This seems to be a VERY VERY worthwhile street turbo mod.. For me, aquiring the CHRA (Titanium cartridges) is part of the whole picture, but its not required.. I think the compressor cover could use a little cleanup and blending on the casting, but its a trick stealthy piece..
Sorry I didn't post any specific numbers in my other thread, In all honesty, dimensionally there isn't a huge difference.

I think with the right mods, both the earlier and later cars are capable of it..
I think the biggest difference are the improvements in torque, stable boost, and of course the revised wastegate flapper likely means better flow of waste gases so boost creep would be reduced slightly (if it ever was really an issue on the older turbo, I didn't see it)
I think overall, spool probably is 100-300rpm later, but torque is slightly better and boost and air volume are improved slightly at upper RPM.. so you have to take that information for what its worth, and see if the investment is worthwhile to you.
The good news is everyone wants big turbo kits, so in the next few months you'll start seeing 05 turbos on the secondary market.. If you spot one, and this interests you, pick one up, its likely going to be an inexpensive and worthwhile upgrade at the least... In my case, I have more than just an upgraded hot side and compressor cover, I have a new Titanium impeller/shaft, Stainless header, and stainless 02 housing, all of these things contribute to spool properties and overall performance.. Once you put together all of these parts, the expense approaches about $2000 and at that point, you have to weigh your personal needs of a combination like that, and an aftermarket complete turbo upgrade (the lest expensive being $2300 or so)
The one thing a mod like this gives you is "stock like" drivability with good gains, just don't expect and stick-swingin dyno sheets unless your willing to reduce every single restriction in the engine and make the turbo do less work... I think as an overall package with cams, ported intake manifold, throttle body, head, intercooler pipes, intercooler, etc.. you've got a winner.. Is it worth the investment, well, everything is compromise, but I believe in optimizing what you have which results in a drivable and fun car that doesn't lose its stock desirable characteristics.

And please, lets not Hijack this thread anymore, there appears to be another thread in the engine/turbo forum similar to this.. I won't post in this thread anymore with this type of info.
Sorry Al..
