Why is it that evos don't obtain boost when output shaft is disconnected (neut/clutch in)? Is something in the housing (where mbc gets the air) controlled by the ECU that sends the supply air to the WG act via mbc?

There's no load.

Thats what I thought: mech energy (exh impellar) > air consumed = psi, but the fact that one can alter the ECU and allow boost w/o this load leaves me confused.

My question is, by what mechanism does one obtain boost when output shaft is disconnected (no load)?

The boost isn't caused by something electronic; it's caused by the bouncing of the revs like if you sit at a light and manually bounce your revs, the boost will build slightly, but if you just hold the revs steady at 5k rpm, the turbo just loses whatever minor spool it had from when you initially hit the gas. I don't know what physically causes this phenomenon.

The revs build faster than boost does when there is no load on the car. If you can activate a rev limiter to limit rpm rise, you can put your foot to the floor on the gas pedal, create enough airflow to produce small amounts of boost.

Load and boost are correlated but not directly.

Retard the timing and add a bunch of fuel, it causes the extra gas to burn so late in the cycle it is actually burning after it has left the cylinder. This is the energy that causes the turbo to spool. I think

here's an important question,

if We were to have your Dynoflash tune with 2 step then took the car to a local tuner for some aditional tunning after some mods would we lose the 2 step since it isn't a part of their program and would essentially be written over?

Hey Al, so you are saying this will cause no damage what so ever to the car , it is perfectly safe to rev the car to those specific rpms and it will stay there worry free?

If your answer is yes, then i will have this mod done in the future.

That all depends on you. I don't think you're going to get any guarantee. If you just dump the clutch I'd say there'd be a chance you'd break something.

Al can let us know but my guess is he is using the VSS and the lower clutch switch to invoke a Fuel/timing/rpm map that IS the 2-step. If a tuner used the same software they might be OK but otherwise my guess would be they overright it. Al probably has the code compiled to keep other tuners from using it so my bet it you lose the 2 step.

I just might go for a drive on Sat. Just to get the two step added. The only thing that worries me is I need to have my fluids in that POS tranny changed and have the clutch adjusted, before I try it out. Sounds like a great feature to have.

GOOD JOB AL!
