Hey man !

First off - when Dave Buschur tells me something about 4g63 - I found out the hard way that you can accept it as a fact - Dave has already been down all these roads. Dan at Pruven - anothed well noted 4g63 authority also warns against these kinf of pulleys in this application. They are talking crank failures - not engine noise. I have not seen any of that yet - but just on their warning you wont see one on my car.

Secondly - I have seen this on 6 evos now and ALL of them had to be retarded on my normal timing curves 2 - 3 degrees to stay under the knock window - approx 12 - 20 whp losses

Third - we are going to test my theory tomorrow on the dyno so you may want to wait till tomorrow night

Blah, blah blah, 6K miles on my Evo 8 crank pulley, picked up 15 HP and 20 lb ft of torque, no knock. Sounds more like a problem with the reflash and a pulley getting the blame. I was standing there when the dyno pulls were made and saw it with my own eyes, noone will tell me different. My car was tuned by a well known DSM tuner in Maryland, who recommends the pulley.

Who ever it is - everyone is entitled to his / her own opinion

For those who are foolish enough not to respect the very good advice of Dave Buschur on matters concerning 4g63 - well - good luck is all I can say

I have two HKS units - the small one that spools at 3800 which I have run so far

And the new one which is shall we say bigger ?

The specs of the HKS GT series turbos are all on the HKS web site

Perrin Lightened Crank Pully

Dyno Flash,

What is your opinion on the lightened crank pully by Perrin? It is the same diameter as stock and they claim it adds no more noise or vibration to the engine and will not wear out the bearings. Thank you in advance.

It has no harmonic balancer so I would not suggest it

Just FYI the evo does not have a harmonic balancer, but whats called a harmonic dampner. Balancers were used on the old V-8 engines to offset the counter weight of the crank. The evo's crank is balanced neutrally and doesn't need a crank pully to do the job for it. Instead the evo uses a set of balanace shafts. Also if you ever look at the crank pulley you will notice the outer part of it seperated by a rubber insert. This outer part is weighted so it will absorb some of the natural harmonics from the engine by putting on a solid allum piece you are now loosing this effect and it will cause an increas in engine noise. As for how come some engine run with the pulley and other don't, thats simple evo engine are not built to close tolerances. The engine are built by machines meaning some evo engines are just closer to being balanced and blueprinted than others. How ever I too would not recommend any aftermarket crank pully without a harmonic dampner incorporated into it for the Evo.

IMO it would be wiser to leave the pully alone and fine you 15hp elsewhere

Well I found this thread, read the WHOLE thing and came to one conclusion. If you plan on getting a Dynoflash tune you do not want to use a lightweight OR underdriven crank pulley. I assume that this is because of knock tolearance from the stock ECU and knock sensor. The manufacture of the pulley does not matter, but the final knock results do matter. If it causes more knock to be seen then your timing will be retarded and you will lose power.

It really comes down down to another decision too. Would you rather have dynoflash OR a crank pulley with other tuning. I think for this example I will take the dynoflash because it is awesome and has the best backed support I have seen from any EVO tuner. Even if Al doesn't return my phone calls after 4 days I am the idiot that didn't look on here first for the answer. I got my answer.
