Terrible Performance at the track

Hi fellaz,
I just got a mail-in flash along with a 3" full turboback with test pipe, MBC set at ~20 PSI. I just went to Bristol Motor Dragway last night and ran terrible. My best run with a 4500 rpm clutch slip and shifting at redline was a 14.516 with a 2.253 60'.
Possible reasons

1. This was my first night out at the track. However, I still expected at least 13's.

2. Bristol is pretty high in elevation (1475') and is slightly uphill.

3. My flash is designed for once I get the walboro fuel pump and a k&n filter which I have not yet installed.

I have seen people with my mods well into the 12's. Any ideas on why this is happening?

i don't mean to be a dick but 2.2? i'd say you don't know how to drag race. practice more.....if your really slipping the clutch you would get alot better 60' times, what was your MPH?

and if your flash is designed for a walbro you might wanna put it in.

last its been discussed many times before a "mail-in" will get you good, but the custom tune is always better

In order to get a good 60 time you need to drop clutch at around 5500RPM. I am not a great racer but was able to get 1.88 60 time.

Post this in the Drag racing forumn next time

Don't know what to tell you man, your clutch is Ga'bage?
I ran a 13.58 @98.5mph at Beachbend north of Nashville with a 1.8 60-ft completely stock. I side stepped the clutch @ 5500 rpms and it shot out the box.
The real questions is what was your mile per hour at the traps?, becasue that is a true indicator of power.

Two things appear to be happening here. First and easiest to fix is your launching technique. Your 60' times could easily improve by at least .3 seconds. That would give you at least .5 seconds better ET if you don't miss shifts, etc. That will also better your trap speeds somewhat.

The second thing is that your car is just not making as much power as others. My car with a 3" cat-back plus K&N drop in filter did a 14.3 at 97 mph in Commerce. This corresponds to the advertised 270 fwhp. To save yourself a lot of grief & expense, I would suggest putting the car back to stock and then take it to a dyno and get some real numbers of the performance. If this shows that the car has problems such as excessive knock or whatever, you might be able to take it to for correction. At any rate, this is where you definitely need to start so you know what you are working with.

If your car is performing as a typical (whatever that is ) EVO, then you can try upgrading components in a carefully thought out manner to see if you can improve the performance. If you are interested in my experience along these lines, write me and I can probably tell you what not to do

IF I give someone a tune for a fuel pump - I AWAYS tell them " TAKE IT EASY" - OFF BOOST till you get the pump in

This is NOT taking it easy!

Get the pump in asap! DANGER

Bristol is a really slow track. I've heard this several times. Hit up Beech Bend and work on your launching method, and you should have 13s easily. Good luck, man.

Put the fuel pump in and also put the K&N filter in also. With the 255 HP fuel pump in, you will be running a good bit richer especially under boost. Sounds like you maybe running a little too lean and possilby experiencing knock, and therefore timing is going to hell. The car is definitely way underpowered at 97 mph.

I ran a 12.89 @ 107.3 mph with virtually the same mods. I had an HKS downpipe instead of the SP 3". On stock clutch with a 2.00 60' time. My Dynoflash at that time was tuned for the stock fuel pump. The Mail in works great if you have all the modifications done that you tell AL when he does the flash.

Correct

Lean + retarded timing is a high egt and bad condition

PLEASE - everyone - do not agree with me that you wil be running the fuel pump and then run the car without a fuel pump - this is a very dangerous manner in which to proceed

The tunes for fuel pumps - eg Fireball 3 and the like - should only be used with cars that have fuel pumps installed !!!!!!!!!!! DO NOT drive the car on boost without the fuel pump !

Similarly - if you do not have a tune for a fuel pump - DON'T ADD a fuel pump without sending in the ecu to get it re-tuned - it will run too rich
