K & N Typhoon Intake advisory !!!!!!! READ
Well I don't know if its really the K&N or it was my bov or what not. First when I installed the K&N my idle was weird. Rough Idle with sometimes red light or stop sign stalls that are silent stalls. Then I replaced the BOV and my idle is fine now. I don't have any problems with it. So no real idea what is really wrong with it. Can anyone explain what the problem is?
From the first beginning post:
I have seen 3 people in the past two weeks with the K & N Typhoon intake system for Evo 8 who's cars were running extremely poorly
I am talking bad
In all 3 cases a lot of time was spent to try and trouble shoot the situation and no resolution was found
Removal of the K & N intake system resulted in a reveresal of the improper operation
I strongly recoomend the K & N drop in filter and also I run the cone filter on my car - they are great products
However - it seems as though there is some issue with the Typoon intake that warrants more investigation and study
In the meantime - if you are a dyno flash customer and seeking through the mail tuning I would suggest you look at another brand of intake - eg Buschur, HKS, AEM, etc wll of which have worked well
Lets here from some Typoon users to see if this is a common problem or maybe these cases were flukes????
Thanks

Alot of info has been posted on this thread :
https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sh...ad.php?t=78543
Several Utec users have gone back to stockers because its so damn hard to get a good tune with the Typoon (other after market combos also)
General consensiss is that the stock box is restrictive, free it up (thats what we want to do!) and" turbulence" is being created through the stock MAF(Karmen vortex sp? which is sensetive to this type of turbulance). This kind of fluxuating "changes" the MAF reading and you need to tune around it for EVERY load point. It can be done but what a pain in the @ss. It also brings up timing issues etc. ad nauseum.
UR Has a mass blowthrough set up that people have been trying , and then theres speed density........
I know this info is more for poeople using a piggy back. my guess is that with a fluxing MAF reading and an A/F ratio being changed by an after market ECU , which may mor may not have a good tune, the reactions are more pronouced than with a stock ECU A/F ratio.

Sorry if this isn't the right place for this question - but what was the best price (w/ shipping) anyone has found for the K&N drop-in panel filters - and where was it? I've seen $62 on speedycarparts.com.

The people that I was dealing with were not getting good reactions from K & N - perhaps if there are many with this issue then K & N will address this condition ??

I already contacted K&N and they acted like everything was all fine and dandy.... I told them how it was making the car run lean and it was pulling timing and boost. He was just like well... i cant do anything for you so..... Basically we need to get a vendor involved to get anything done.. Otherwise i got a 210$ pile of Filter Parts.....
Also if this is the way K&N address' problems i wont be dealing with them again. Any chance you can get involved and contact K&N with this issue? They usually dont listen to the little guys but someone that is at vendor level or even well known tuner like yourself that has all their ducks in a row. They tend to listen to you guys...... Anyway if i lived a little closer i would be willing to put my car up for testing on a dyno..........

o yeah i meant to mention while i was having this problem i found a fix but it was really ugly
i ended up taping up about 3/4 of the filter and it began running a little bit better... still not as good as the stock intake but alot better than it was before putting tape on the filter......

I guess I'm not the only one who is experiencing problems with the K&N typhoon system. I had bought this system from Vivid on the pretense that it was the best system for the car and so far I have been completely underwhelmed with it. It definitely retards timing at the top end and makes the car feel more sluggish. I'll definitely be taking this off the car and getting another system.
man you wont believe how much the car wakes up when you put the stocker back on.... i couldnt believe that my butt dyno didnt scream hey! you lost horses with this one.... but i believe being overjoyed with the extra sound it calmed the voice inside lol......

I think the flaw is in the pipes design. I cant prove anything but just take a look at it. Its a lot worst then a DIY. ALso anyone figured out why there is a metal flap inside in the middle of no where?

My main concern is here is to avoid having my present and future customers buy one of these till they fix these issues
Also - I dread the though of showing up at a tuning trip and seeing one of those intakes on a car
