K & N Typhoon Intake advisory !!!!!!! READ
I had a huge problem with the Typhoon. I had just used a flange and K & N and had the car tuned perfect. I installed the Typhoon just to clean up the looks under the hood and Holy Crap!! I pulled out of the driveway and the AFR went from like 11.7 on the wideband to about 10.0. I had to take away about 20% of fuel to even make it run. It still ran like **** as far as driveability and part throttle. I could not make it all around as good as I had it before. I pulled it back in a couple days later and just swapped the tube back to stock(left the new filter and carbon heat shield), put the original numbers back in the AFC and bam, perfect. Amazing!!! Must just make the flow through the Mass air so much better that it is seeing a LOT more air and giving it a bunch more fuel. Can't actually be really getting more air, just seeing more and flowing through the sensor smoother.

Here is the response I recieved from K&N. The problem seems to happen only in the more modified cars. They are looking for someone with problems that they can run some test on. If you are in Socal and interested, send me a pm and I'll give you the contact info.

on these forums, but we were unsuccessful in duplicating the problems that
were discussed. We have also mentioned to our distributors that if they
found an issue in the SoCal area, to have the customer call us direct.
Unfortunately, if we can not find or duplicate the problem, then we cannot
begin to solve it.
> We have planned to bring in another stock 2004 EVO this week, to address
these exact issues again. We will perform mainly parameter checks and
computer diagnostics, to see what the computer reads.
> K&N believes that most of these issues may be from additional
modifications, or incorrectly installed kits. Our R&D department managers
have discussed this with our current Prototypees, and they have nothing but
good things to say about our product and its performance. Most complaints
with our Intake seem to also have a piggyback computer like the XEDE, UTEC,
or dyno-reflash, which changes the stock parameters on which our intake kit
was designed to run.
> Our 2003 Project EVO, sponsored by Mitsubishi, ran only an Exhaust,
larger front-mount intercooler, and our intake, and ran extremely well on
the streets and on the dyno. No computer adjustments were made.
> We take these concerns very seriously, and will continue to investigate
until we have a solution. If any customers have similar complaints, and are
willing to bring their vehicle down for testing, we ask that they contact
XXXXX at K&N, phone number 909-XXX-XXXX.

thanks for your effort man but it appears they wont come off their high horse and admit that the product has a problem.... my car is bone stock and has issues with the K&N.............. so they are wrong there..... and improperly installed i want them to explain to me how u can mess this up................ wow K&N almost reminds me of
lol

I have a typhoon intake and I have no problems with mine. I may not be experienced enough to know if it is throwing off the timing but I installed it along with some other aftermarket products and had it xflashed...(sorry Al..you weren't in CO). I have no problems with the intake...it pulls hard all the way to the top and I feel no loss of power.
Another gentleman asked this question but it was never answered...so I am curious....If you had your car re-tuned with the intake on, would you need to reflash it, if you put the stock box back on. Please let me know. I might take the time to change it back and forth just to see if there is a difference.

I told Al (Dynoflash) that I'm having Typoon b4 he reflash my evo, so I dont think it would matter. Of course, unless they recently find a reflash fix with the typoon intake.

I do have a boost guage. I put my intake on 1 day before I got it flashed....so I don't know if it was running incorrectly. I do know that with the re-flash of my car, the intake runs just fine. I have no problems with my car.
I have heard that it will cause problems until you get your car flashed. Once flashed the intake and your car should run smoothly. It may produce better hp too. Depends on your evo.
I had a K&N Typhoon on my evo, and after putting it on, my evo started dying all the time while rolling up to lights or stop signs. It also felt a lot slower (no actual numbers to prove) it just in general felt like it was running like crap. I was also getting ridculously horrible gas mileage. I decided to take the Typhoon off and put the stocker back on. No problems now idle is fine no stop light stalls. Feels much smoother power band. Only mods I have done are intake reflash and gauges.
must be nice on the 9.06 run in the eighted mine with the pos k&n ty**** run a 10flat and no better but needless to say i call al (THEMAN) and he said get rid of it and do the flash and i will be fast again and boy was he right i turn a 8.5 the other night with 90degrees blowing into my intercooler but it is trash but it will bolt up to a 2g thats the filter and adater but the pipe will work on a 1g so good luck guys al knows what hes talking about in my opinion. so thanks al car is great!
im having the same stalling problems since i put the aem intake pipe .....its drivingme nuts my gas mileage sucks aswell....it seems like the motor floods for a second but if you try to give it gas it makes it wose......i guess the maf is just going a little nuts cause of the turbulence....the turbo sounds great and the spool up is awsome but i cant stand the terrible gas mileage and stalling.......i have the ecu tuned for the aem by dynoflash but its still screwing with me...so i think ill have to put the stocker back on when i head out to the meet in tampa just get it flashed for the stocker.....by the way if any one wants the aem intake pipe thats going to the meet in tampa i will be happy to sell....
I have the HKS RS intake, and sometimes when I am driving at really slow speeds, like when pulling into my garage, the engine will bog when I lift off the throttle...it never stalls, but the RPMs drop WAY down for a sec, then recover...
