Usually timing at peak torque is less than pump gas. E85 seems to get closer to pump gas at higher rpms, but I can't remember if its typical to be able to run the same timing as pump gas out at higher rpms. He was on race gas previously, and that can take more timing than pump gas.

 

hmmm strange as i thought e85 was targeted as a race gas! ?
so where does the extra power come from if no extra timing can be had?

 

In the peak torque regime, the power comes from additional boost. Since there are no issues with detonation, the sky is pretty much the limit on boost. At higher rpm, it comes from more boost and also somewhat more timing. I was able to run about 3-4 deg more timing than what I could on WA 92 oct (not much different than CA 91).

 

91 to E85 you can run a shiat ton more timing high midrange to top end, obviously setup my vary.

Of course showing an example of going from the crappiest fuel (91 oct) to E85 will show the extreme end of this spectrum, but yes that is the reason even the stock turbo cars that are flow limited up top because of turbo size, still gain a good amount of power going to E85.

Once you move into the larger turbos the balance of more boost and timing is what the big power adder is.

A good example of that is this car that gained 142whp / 123wtq from 91 oct to E85 on a 35R equipped Evo 8.

ya from what ive learned e85 doesnt take much timing at peak torque but after peak load/torque you can really ramp it up fast. sure as hell takes more timing then pump gas cars. 18-19+

 

she's running strong e85 now.

loving it. very very smooth. jus a lil hiccup on my part.

been at 26psi. 6262. water injection.

guna turn it up to the fun stuff and try 29psi this weekend and eventually 32psi the week after (only drive the car 1-2x a week)

e85 is some amazing stuff. i was running moderately high timing at 26psi w/ 12.9AFR and 0knock. i toned her down to 11.8 or so tho, but atleast i know she can be pushed hard w/o issues.

 

ya 11.8 is where most stay. just make sure you have your peak torque timing set right and e85 is all good. depending on source of your e85 it may never show knock unless you run it pig rich.

 

are you running water injection with E85 ?

 

yep. 100% water. no meth.

250psi pump. M14 nozzle.

runs smooth as silk. not necessary, but i figure any little bit to help cool IAT's to help suppress knock, will help.

 

There really isn't a big reason to run water injection with E85. Due to the amount of E85 that you have to use to get a proper AFR, EGT's never really get out of hand.

I would ditch the water injection kit. If anything it may be causing issues.

 

my issues were when the water injection wasnt on (the water inj not on, was Not the problem tho, just to clarify).

so far the car is letting me throw w/e i want at it from 11 to 13afr to w/e boost i can reach.

when i go out for "friendly runs", i tend to freeze the water to get a lil more cooling effect out of the whole procedure as well. although there is more e85 to cool the CC's down, i do believe water has better cooling properties.

anyways, runs great right now, so not guna mess w/ the gravy train and stray away from what's working for my particular setup.
