Custom 2 map tuning? for evo 9!

I'm just curious how would it work with two maps ? I'm bringing in my car to get it dyno tune for two maps. One for 91 and other for race gas. I was wondering does EcuFlash provide a switch that can switch map instantly or I would have to take the chip out from my ecu to replace it with the other chip ?

thank you

You would store the two maps on some storeage media or on your lap top and reload them via ecu flash when needed

I've found the logic in the code that determines how much of each of the low and high octane maps are used. If someone cleverer than myself can crack the serial routines we could send a custom requestID from Evoscan to mapswitch, or use some other trigger that the ECU could read. A spare analog input could have a potentiometer to slide between the low and high maps (or somewhere in between) manually.

Its getting there.. Currently the way to do it is as Dynoflash says.. In the future there may be more options..

(I promise I'll spend a bit of time on the serial comms this coming week)

So, there aren't any issues uploading each specific map when running different octane levels. I spoke to someone recently that said it isn't ideal to switch maps every time running race gas?

Did this person tell you why? Their answer will go a long way toward establishing credibility.

I suspect its likely because the way the flash rom hardware is designed, if you were to reflash the ECU constantly you could be "using up" its lifespan.. Although most of us have not yet had any problems, and there are quite a few people and tuners who have reflashed their car hundreds of times, I can understand why there might be a reason to take it easy.

Only, for the moment the only alternative would be to also run a piggyback, You could use a UTEC, XEDE, ECU+ anything, and then program it with a race map you can change to any time you want. The ECU+ would require you to load and save the changes from a laptop, but the XEDE has dual maps, and the UTEC has a passthrough mode (for your regular tune) and you can have several different race/street/performance/valet tunes..

Like I said, in the future there will be other options, such as the Cobb Accessport, but if the technology is just based on reflashing maps, its the same concern as reflashing with ECUFlash.. If their using technology like the way DSMLink would work (you alter parameters and they stay active until the battery is reset) but thats a bit off into the future.

really, then there no point of me getting tune on 2 maps then because I don't have a labtop to load the other map. =*(

I still don't understand how you could "use up" the lifespan. It's not like you have an old map saved everytime you flash to a new map, correct?

According to mitsubishi, the flash chip on the ECU has a limited lifespan of 100 full writes.. What that means is any particular byte is only guaranteed to write without error for 100 times.. if you overwrite one specific byte over and over, you may eventually get an error.

The good news is this is a number given to Mitsubishi by the chip manufacturer, So far we have determined the ECU can be rewritten hundreds if not thousands of times.. But if you were reflashing your ECU several times a day, for a long duration of time, you can eventually reduce the lifespan of the flash chip..

I wouldn't worry about it though, I think Dynoflash reflashed his ECU over 1000 times and never got an error, and there are quite a few of us who have over 100 times..

But the flash built into our ECU's is not the same type of chip as flash ram in your average thumb drive, which has no set lifespan.. Keep that in mind..

so there basically no point in getting two map tune then. Unless you have a addition lap top to log the second map into the ecu.

right, but why not get a laptop? you can get a used one capable of running ecuflash, evoscan and other tools for a few hundred bucks - a dedicated laptop for the car is the first 'mod' you should buy if you're serious about modifying it, IMO
