Stock timing/fuel maps...
1. a car can nose dive with 10 counts of knock. If 3 counts pull one degree, then 10 will pull 3 degrees. You are WOT @ 6000 rpm, your target map is 9 degrees and you get 10 counts of knock. You just had your timing pulled back to 6 degrees. That will cost you power.
2. Why would someone race an Evo on pump gas? When I am on the road course I am running 100 octane on my Evo. I am sorry but running 93 octane on the road course is just asking for trouble. On 100 octane you can run stock timing and 11.5:1 AFR w/o knock.
Personally, I tune my 93 octane maps for the occasional WOT run and to learn how to tune. To me the process is more important than the end result.
Two things:

Besides, I wonder how many people have tuned their cars out well in 3rd and then gone out and lugged it through the RPM band in 4th and watched what the ECU thinks of it
