Timing advancing, while knock counts rise
My Friend bought a used 03 evo, on its first 3 gear pull I logged with Mitsulogger, we got counts as high a 17. Around 4000 it knocks up to around 12 counts and starts to pull timing, then after 6000 it still shows lots of knock and yet, timing is advancing now. Can anybody explain this. I will be working on this car for the next couple hours. Going to make sure everything looks good with the plugs, fuel injectors, and everything under the hood, then do another pull to see were we are today.

post the log please, also, does the high octane map match the low?
Like John said, you'll still get advancing timing with knock. You just won't get to your set timing advance as dictated in the maps.
Your timing will be pulled about 1* for every 3 counts. So if you are getting 17 counts of knock, the ECU is pulling roughly 6 degrees from what you map says in that RPM/load cell.
The timing will still advance, though. The knock retard is just a correction factor due to the knock counts.
