ECUflash pwnd a lot of tuners, and created a bunch of new ones at the same time.

I'd be interested to know how fast the business left the OG tuners with the advent of ECUflash. There were a handful of guys who did mail-in flashes and traveled to tune for a few years, and they had it good. But ECUflash squashed that as local tuners started to get smart, were able to use a good tool (ECUflash) and built up reputations.

I know that where I used to live in Utah there won't be any out of state tuners coming in as a few guys got good with ECUflash and totally dominate that local scene. That seems to be the case up here in the Pacific Northwest as well.

I follow the tuning threads on the Evo X and I too got my posts deleted and punishment points assigned by certain moderator because I argued with a certain tuner. I was trying to warn people that past practice is your best guide to future results. That tuner treats Knock Sum as floor noise and made tunes for the 8 and 9 that produced 10-12 knock counts. He is now tuning the X with a piggyback.

I am willing to bet that once people are able to log Knock on the X, they will discover the same knock as we discovered on the VIII and IX.

Another tuner is nut swinging with ECUtek and accusing ECUflash of stealing ECUTek work. He is also attacking the amateur tuners in this forum. I wanted to respond, but I knew that my posts will be removed and I will be assigned punishment points. Most of the old timers here know who he is. All I have to mention is 888888888888888

I had two expensive "8" maps before ECUFlash came out... Thank the Lord it did.

The copy paste block tuning master cost a friend of mine a rod bearing and eventually a motor in an evo 8. He's a hack and to make things worse he would make the low octane maps the same as the high octane to null out one of the cars built in safety features. I believe Al should be responsible for the motors he's ****ed up over the years.

IMO at least if you want to tune with the maps flat, when you are done tuning put the low octane maps back to the stock values or take 10 mins and back the low octane maps back and use it for your base tunes for safety. But then again wtf do I know...

Thats what I got the car with, 8's and low/high the same. And the absolute worst crap I have ever seen on the fuel map. It looked like someone was drawing faces with the cell shading.

I recently had to unscramble one to give the guy a base map for his new turbo and injectors. Notice I said GIVE. What did I find after getting into it? A 100% stock map. Scrambled ID to hide their tracks. How do you send a guy a STOCK map when they pay for a flash? Thats criminal.

In a way I'm almost glad it was stock. Atleast it was safe.
This should serve as a lesson to all. Tune your own cars and continue to share ideas and knowledge. Or s*** like this can happen to you.

WOW 7 degrees of timing in closed loop with egr will make it miss like crazy. All the fuel goes out the tailpipe. Just add about 35* at 60% load and it will be ok- lol

this is the map that was in my car when I bought it with 14k miles and no mods...when i test drove the car it would nose dive when I got on it...I could feel the timing being pulled down to nothing lol.

I'm just glad that we finally got ECUFlash. I was used to using DSMLink on my DSM years ago and ECUFlash now has almost all of the features of DSMLink and it's getting better all the time.

I remember long ago on this board when I tried to explain to 'tuners' and others about knock and how you need to be able to log that to tune well, yet there were always posts right back against me and a flood of others that backed that shop or 'tuner'.

There are still fanboys of certain tuners and shops that will never get their head out of their asses. But, you know what...I don't care. That's why I love this forum so much. We are all here to learn and help each other learn. Everyone wins in that situation. People in this forum find out very quickly who can and can't tune and who really cares about their customers.

I'm just glad that we have this subforum where people like us can share our knowledge and information with each other so everyone wins in the end. Ultimately, we all learn to tune our own car without having to rely on someone else. Knowledge is power and it's great when there is a community that willingly shares it.

Well I block tune the fuel maps so I don't really see anything wrong with that. As long as you have lean spool disabled, you have no boost leaks, and your MAF is calibrated correctly (I've NEVER had to rescale a stock maf) then I plug in a static number at all RPM's above about 180% load and slowly taper it to the stock maps down low. The goal is that once you are in heavy boost you want to hit your target AFR, which both my cars do every time I'm sure somebody will see a custom map someday that I've tune for them and think that I'm a hack, but the cars run great with 0 knock!

EDIT:
I do see a problem even with the fuel map. He's shoving fuel down the cars throat in an attempt to shove timing down it as well.

actually the ''tuned'' map is significantly leaner than stock... a terrific idea if you're going to ramp the timing way up

/end sarcasm

0x5658...hehehe...let him plug that one in and see what he thinks

There are times that block tuning is 100% okay. One is when you are using a MAFT or MAFT Pro and need to dial things in. Lean spool being disabled generally means that the map is going to look the same at all points or really close to get the desired AFR curve.

I have a few dandy maps that I have found that I will go look for in a bit. One that is 9* at peak torque and 24 by redline on pump. The car wouldnt run over 14psi when I got to it. Crazy stuff

One thing about changing both maps the same (and I know this has different viewpoints) is that if the car is tuned badly enough that it has to go to the low octane maps its probably gonna blow up anyway. Its all aout tuning it right to start with and then setting the maps (low and high) to something close. Low octane fuel maps NEED to be the same if the car has bigger than stock injectors...PERIOD. The car will start to go rich with prolonged knock and cause all sorts of issues. Timing is one of those things I flip flop on, and this week I dont see a problem doing that to my own car and something with a 4-5* safety net on customer cars. One reason I hoped the EGR map (the one I had called the Dynamic map) would work all the time and be there for those unexpected occasions. It doesnt, and no customer ever got a tune that had anything less than a safe tune all by itself, but thats how it goes I guess
