lol @ this timing map...

I helped a friend with his tune tonight. The car is very clean and has a great mod list... basically an Evo 8 with all bolt-ons.

The car had been tuned by several different people, including local shops and e-flashes by companies which will remain nameless.

My friend complained of several things:

- The car feels slower than it should
- Highway gas mileage is terrible since the last tuner fixed spool up knock
- His last tune was conservative because he was planning on road racing, but changed his mind and wants a more aggressive tune

Before looking at the maps, we enabled all 2 Byte, and then I came across this gem of a tune:

It would appear the last tuner decided a huge block of 7's would solve spool up knock... I imagine this is what's been causing his poor gas mileage. Also, the 3000 and 4500RPM rows look way out of place... just not my cup of tea.

Anywhoo, we re-scaled the maps and then did our first log... This "conservative" tune threw 10 counts of knock.

After a few reflashes on a COMPLETELY different map, we ended up with a much nicer curve, leaned the top end AFR and turned the boost up... all in all I think he's pretty happy. The car feels completely different.

yeah, it works, but wow, how do you figure less timing at lower load than higher?

Yano... I see this crap more and more. My garbage flash I had on my car when I got it... and more and more on these e-flashes.

Rule#1. If you have to lock the timing down abnormally to keep it from knocking.
A: You are lazy because its not your car. You'll probably lock/jumble the map too because you don't want anyone "stealing your secrets" AKA seeing your cut rate hack job.
B: Other aspects of the tune are way way off.
C: There are problems with the engine / setup.

Glad you got it worked out SC.

I saw a timing map in a IX that looked almost exactly like that. The car put down 307whp/265wtq with the tune that he came in with. The hp curve looked just like a SC curve, with peak power being right at redline. When I was done it made 305hp/310wtq with a much more usable power band.

Very nice, I have come across quite a few of those, and a few being from big name tuners even. I am surprised that they are even still in business.

Where'd you find my map? You can't post that ... it's my "intellectual" property!

he he ...

I agree with all you mentioned, but also what kind of Evo needs 13º advance at idle? I'm tuning a 2.3l w/ 280s right now and it runs fine with 9º ...

How do you jump from mid 20s to a 7? Where's the transition? I can see why the knock and the slower feeling.

Man, he have any stalling issues or serious dips during decel with that?? Block tuning is getting bad these days. Its like every time they use a new value, its deducted from their paycheck or something.
