I didn't just guess at what the tables does. I read the code, and its clearly an "upper bound" vs coolant temp. The ECU will clip any value read from the MIVEC table that is higher than this upper bound. If you want, I'll post the code for you to see yourself.

The vs coolant temp could simply be a left over from the initial software write. Being vs coolant temp doesnt really amount to much in relation to what Groc is talking about. Its a pointer to the leading edge trigger (72* of crank rotation at the crank trigger to determine cam position relative to the crank) and is basically set at 72* as the 0 point (-1.2* advance on the MIVEC table, 0* BTDC according the factory service manual. The higher order standalones make this more apparent than the factory code does.
