Logging and tuning on a flat road

Hi

Ive been logging up a hill to reach those high load cells and I think ive got it all dialed in - a dyno visit soon hopefully will tell but the other day, i decided to pull a run on a flat bit of road...maybe just slightly tilted downhill.

result. a lot of knock from 6000 rpm upwards. 7 - 11 counts of it!
map tracer tells me load cells im hitting are 60 - 80

I did a log up a hill - same day only about 10 minutes later and knock levels are normal 0-3 counts - mostly 1's and 2's which is about right so im confused.

on a stock evo 7-8 map, timing in these areas are high so without going into exact details on what timing numbers I should have here, generally speaking, should I tune like this: (highlighted cells)

this picture was another users post - for eliminating knock during shifts but would I need to lower the timing in my maps as well similar to that highlighted in order to eliminate knock at loads 60-80?

i didnt have my wideband on me that day but estimating from narrowband, this knock isnt from running too rich.

anyone tuned on a flat or logged on a flat?
thoughts?

Thanks
Rob

You already answered your own question... you are hitting different load cells on flat and uphill roads...

thats what I thought but after reading the "how to tune" as well as many others, almost all threads refer to only tuning in the higher loads.....

if this is the case and i should be tuning this area, would I then need to somehow apply smoothing to eliminate big changes?

thanks
Rob

Yes, as jumps in timing or irratic timing will also cause knock... ie ramping up timing like so

0011122233234454467899810...

see how the timing ramps up and then dips back down...

it's because there's not a smooth transition from one cell to another...that's what's causing the knock when you are hitting those cells...gotta smooth them out a bit and try again.

thanks for the reply guys

the above map is not my map. Its smooth on my map - numbers are like 31-32

I was just wondering if theres others out there that have tuned this area of their maps...

Thanks

the only time i tune close to that region is for "shift knock"

and it seems like that is what is seen on this map...

NOTE: i never tuned uphill.

yes youre right rolly, the map is for shift knock - i just used it as an example.

according to map tracer, im hitting 70-80 load cells at 5000 - 7000 - boost tappered down to about 17-18psi and im getting crazy high knock counts...

just wondering, if you dont log up hill, how do you hit the high load cells?

im running an ix turbo on a vii

cheers

you need to run higher boost to hit higher loads, tuning uphill is

Im just curious how you hit 70-80 load at 5-7k. Is this partial throttle?

At 17-18 psi, you should be at 180 or so.

What are you messing with low load high rpm? You are NOT hitting those cells in boost.
