+1... Make sure you are plugged into the OUT cable on your LC1 with your serial cable. Also do you have a serial port on your notebook, or are you using a USB to serial cable. If you are using a USB to serial cable make sure you have all your drivers downloaded. I ran into that problem when I changed out logging notebooks. One had XP the other Windows 7... when I couldn't get the drivers for the USB Drivers for the Windows 7 notebook I couldn't get Evo Scan to recognise my LC1 either.

the db gauge is just the gauge that comes with some of the kits with the LC1

Hmmmmm and you said that you have a steady red light... it's not flashing? If so I would check Innovates web forum or give em a call? If it had been a few years ago it could have been an evoscan glitch; I know I had a similar issue but that was back in like 07. As evolved as evoscan is now I am pretty sure it's not the problem. I don't know bro

i know that grounding is a big issue with these but i dont know if that would mess with logging. Make sure all your grounds are connected at the same point

A simple thing to check:

Make sure you have the correct COM port selected.

Ok so we have verified that it's not the LC1... Is it like it was fine before and ALL of a sudden its not working or have you not been able to log at all period?
