wanting to learn how to tune
Hey guys im just starting out but I want to learn how to tune my own car. How hard is the mivec to tune? please only comment if you have tuned the mivec motor yourself. thank you in advance for all of your help.
There's not that much to tune IMO; there are pretty much a few maps out there than are considered good starting points, like the JDM RS MIVEC map, but besides a little tinkering there's not that much to do. Basically it goes like this:
You start with low advance at idle, medium advance at cruise, peak advance at peak torque, then down to little/no advance at red line.
Here's my MIVEC map to give you an idea. It started out as the map by nj1266 from the "how to tune an evo" thread (https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/ec...-tune-evo.html) which I then smoothed out/tweaked.

I tuned the Mivec and everything else first time from posts on evom a few years ago. The MIVEC was the easiest part, mostly because of what Raptord mentions. There just simply isn't that much to change. The JDM RS map worked pretty good for me and then I tweaked like 5 additional cells or something.
Follow what guru's like raptord, nj1266, mrfred, and acamus have written and you are golden. The how to tune an evo thread mentioned above is sort of a bible. Read it for comprehension a bunch of times, and always make small incremental changes.
The big advantage to tuning yourself is you can take as long as you need, and be as detailed and careful as you want. the information is all here, and so is a ton of help if you get stuck.
