I've literally never seen a larger engine with better MPG than a small one( assuming most else being equal). More displacement = more air = more fuel. They have more torque because their are getting the added fuel/air. I could be wrong, though. It's happened once or twice :-P
Maybe you are thinking of gas pedal travel. A larger engine would take less gas (pedal) and RPM.

i wouldn't imagine you would be too worried about MPG if you are building a 2.4L with a big turbo. you can't have your cake and eat it too

Timing map is always in use in both closed and open loop. Its the only map for timing advance, and the computer does not do calculations in closed loop to optimize timing like it does for fueling. What's in your timing map is what you get.

I get ~16mpg on 91 octane with mixed city and freeway (80mph) and spirited driving with the setup in my sig. E85 I get about 11-12..

ah, gotcha. i didn't think about that. i just habitually typed fuel/timing LOL. thanks for the correcting. i was just replying to OP's a/f comment and assumed he was only tuning fuel maps. see what happens when you read the internet half asleep? LOL

the Evo has I think 10* base timing, the timing map is an "adder" over that base timing. So, you have plenty of timing in cruise lol...
