Stock evo 9 turbo in kill mode E85 Built 2L S3's
Just finished up tweaking Pete's car on E85. This car is a beast! Were looking for a 10 second pass on the stock turbo. The car previously ran 11.3 @ 120 with around 410whp vd.
Boost: 35psi
Fuel: E85
EMS: tephra v7 speed density
Loc: NY
Mods:
Evo 9 RS (2 passengers in the car)
Built 2L 10.5:1
GSC S3's
Ported stock IX turbo 18psi WGA
Ported Ex mani by Curt Brown
Shearer fab o2 dump
BR v-band TBE
BR Race FMIC
BR UICP
BR mini battery kit
SynapseTurbo LICP
Tial Q BOV
Hallman MBC
Walbro 255 modded
PTE1200's
Exedy triple

Results are not final, but good enough to share.
The car is equipped with a 3 port as well, but i was afraid to use it, so we just left the table zero'ed out for now.
I don't want to grenade the turbo. 35psi spike down low is pushing it as it is.

Its an interesting AF curve. I guess I'm most shocked that Pete has that kind of down low grunt while running the S3s. Is that because of the engine compression, bleeding edge boost levels or both?
When I see a build like this I wonder why this selection of parts. Why not simply go with a 2.3L with a slightly bigger turbo then run lower boost?

That sounds like war!
Don't mind the afr curve, we are not finished yet. I am surprised also how much torque the car made. But you have to think of it this way:
The 2.0L is just small enough displacement to not be to big for the stock turbo, therefore you can do things with the turbo that you cant on larger displacements, where the stock turbo would be not enough turbo for the larger engine.
I feel this is one of many reasons the car took 35psi like a champ and just made a really great low end torque curve for a 2.0L engine. (don't forget mivec!)
a 2.3L would spool the turbo up sooner, making even more low end due to the quicker spooling of the turbo, but it would not be able to run the same boost as the 2.0L can as safely. it is quite interesting when you look at it this way. in this perspective boost can sometimes make up for displacement. (although the displacement is always going to get there first though)
I think once were done i can get the car to 470/470tq, but maybe not. normally you do not see more torque then hp in these cars unless the tune is conservative at higher RPM or something is not being done with the tune to not allow the HP uptop. not the case here.
I am thinking once i add more boost uptop with the 3 port (right now its not being used,) we can potentially increase the HP to match the tq ideally.
A Lot of his power #'s come from the mod list. the parts combination is just working really well.
This car is very impressive for sure. the graphs at smoothing 1 look beautiful also.
To be perfectly honest with you i cannnot answer that question unless its tested on the specific car. every setup is going to respond differently.
on paper you would not want to go bigger then the S1's on the a stock turbo car because the S1's are designed for the low/mid range more then top end such as the S3.
However we have done cam swap back to back testing and it has shown the S3's are worth the swap for the little low end loss.

This has me thinking. I have most of the mods he does. I'm thinking about adding s2, open dump, and 3port and gsc springs and retainers. I don't have e85 but I have meth. Just can't decide whether I should get the mods I described or just get a bbk full. It will be around the same price either way. Been wrestling with this for awhile now. Great results though!!! If I ever decide to do a remote tune I would go with Tom for sure. Always seems to squeeze great results out of every setup!
