Unlumpy poncam suggestions

Hey guys, just looking to get some advice on cams.

Probably going to get some flak for this, but I'm not a fan of lumpy sounding cams. I'm looking in to purchasing some poncams that don't sound too lumpy, but offer a some performance gain. I know timing can affect the lumpy sound, but I was wondering if there's any hinderance on performance gains if I have it tuned to produce as little lump as possible.

Can anyone suggest some baby poncam options out there and how much I'd realistically look at gaining power wise? I have an E7 if that helps - not looking to get crazy numbers anyhow. Engine is stock, only 'mods' are:
HKS Kansai I/C piping
Tomei V1 Dump and downpipe.
As far as I know, the cars been tuned earlier in it's life but I'm unsure what it's pushing atm. A friend of mine who previously owned a 7 says it feels like it's pushing about 22 PSI.

Considering purchasing HKS injectors too.

Thanks,
TIA

Hello / Welcome to our boards @vo777

Many of us use / recommend the GSC line of cams for the 4G63. I run the S2's (274 degrees of duration) and can be setup to be lopey at idle

The GSC S1's (268 degrees of duration) are likely what you need as Ive heard they are stockish in their idle trim
Here they are if interested: https://www.power-division.com/evolu...8_S1_Cams.html

Cheers, Joe

VO777,

You want "Non-Lumpy" cams, what you want is HKS 274/278 for Evo 6-8 without MIVEC.
They are awesome.

Frankly, performance matches the much loved GSC S2 cams, but with added bonus of steady idle, truly superb manners.
Of course, you need to urgently "up" the injector capacity, install Walboro 255 lph fuel pump and have car professionally tuned. Or damage may occur. Do not install parts without proper ECU mapping.

If you want a smooth idle, you'll want a true 264ish cam, like GSC S1's, or the HKS 272 as they arent really a 272.

I had these HKS cams and can attest they didn't require any special tuning for manners or idle. I DD' on the HKS and the GSC S2 for years now and my impression is that the S2 have it over HKS @ >3k RPM. It would be a small project to compile the data, but I'm confident it would agree. The reason I swapped the HKS cams was because the exhaust cam cracked in half while merging onto a freeway.

On stock ECU on Closed Loop and Stock MAF, S2 will be lumpy on Non-Mivec Evo.
No matter how setup..the setup of S2 has to be straight up for optimal performance...the lumpy comes from intake air pulses caused by cam -timing, and challenge in tuning closed loop idle and off idle.
MIVEC helps, but does not not solve the lumpiness.

If you run SD- Speed Density, most of the Lumpiness of S2 can be taken out on Stock ECU(Tephra ROM).

But HKS 274/278 do not require special care, can run stock MAF and closed loop at idle and have wonderful smooth idle.

I just want to make sure person asking question does not get side tracked by your statement, as if the cams require some "special setup": S2 have been tested in all setups and it was found that they work best at 0/0. And stock ECU on Tephra has been used on countless cars to try to smooth out S2 at idle, and the best work around fond was SD and open loop at idle. But we like closed loop and many prefer to stick to OEM MAF.

Well said! Wanting to extract more performance & requiring a quiet exhaust & cams that dont lope seems ironic to me

I personally love the idle sound of my S2's

IIRC, you have an Evo9. Mivec is why your idle is smooth. Mivec even makes the R2's in my car idle like stock..

I have an VIII that I've owned since the lot. The S1s will give you a lumpy idle relative to stock and the S2s are worse (ran the S1s for 6+ years and on the S2s now). You can try to tune them a bit to get rid of it but neither will ever truly run like stock.
