Guys, I'm pretty new to the site. Please forgive me if my questions are inappropriate for this thread

I'd like to install a pair of speakers in the doors of my '06 RS. The speakers' mounting depth is 2.5" and the tweeter protrudes by 1/2". Will they fit relative to the grill in the door panel and the window?

My RS came with radio prep. Do I need to purchase an installation kit from the dealer for the HU?

well if the depth is only 2.5" not all speakers are going to fit unless you get brackets or get creative. make sure you install with the windows down if you cut the bezel behind the speaker to allow for clearance. the tweeters are so small anyways so have fun with them...

the radio, you shouldnt have to buy any dash kit, just get a wiring harness. you use the brackets to attatch to your factory rado, attatch the harness, find a ground, attatch the antenna, etc etc. and call it a day

I don't think I explained myself well, as I don't know the mounting depth of the door. That's, actually, what I'm trying to find. The speakers have a mounting depth of 2.5". They're coaxials and their respective tweeters protrude ~1/2" past the plane of the woofers. I'd like to know whether there's enough room behind the factory grills to accommodate the protruding tweeters, and whether there's enough clearance in the doors to mount speakers whose depth is 2.5".

Judging by the Boston speakers installed in the door - shown elsewhere in this thread - my speakers should fit, but I'd still like to get a confirmation from someone with Evo install experience.

My car is a RS and it didn't come with a factory radio. I've searched this topic and saw mentions of a dash kit for the RS, hence the genesis of my question. Thanks for taking the time to reply!

I get my carpet, vinyl, etc from A1 Foam & Fabric in Santa Ana on Main St. They have just about everything you'd want or need for car installations. Just bring a sample piece of fabric and they'll help you find one that matches. It's probably a bit of a drive for you, but if you can't find any carpet places around you, A1 will probably have what you need. Make sure you get the backless fabric though, since they have automotive fabric w/ backing, which won't stretch around corners or curves.

The rear tweeter location is not where I wanted it to go in terms of looks. I would've rather had them down in the lower corner of the grille, mounted separately on the rear deck, or mounted somewhere on the door, but that would've taken more time, and required more cutting etc. I didn't want to start hacking at the rear deck or the door panels since they're expensive pieces to replace so I figured I'd mount it where they'd have best SQL, since they're mounted directly on-axis.

No glassing going to be done here if I can avoid it! It's already taking me long enough, let alone having to glass something when there's a simpler, cleaner route. For the gauges, he gave me a triple gauge pod that sits on top of the dash, which I'm going to mount the center channel in.

George, your phone doesn't seem to work. Spend too much on the car and not enough on your phone bill? lol, jk. Anyway, the front speakers are exactly like the rear speakers, so I'm going to move the 6.5s to the front doors, and put the 5.25s in the rear deck. Or do you want to buy another 6.5 set? Let me know.

FJF, there most likely is enough room to clear the tweet, depending on how thick you make your bracket, but I'm not sure about the depth since I haven't checked that yet. I can check for you once I get the battery installed back in. lol

Thank you! I look forward to your findings.

FWIW, this is a pic of the amprack I built for my GTI:

It was my first install. The Evo will have a much simpler/lighter system.

Edit - I was thinking of using these mounting brackets/adapters:

Many higher end speakers these days are starting to use Neodyminum magnets on the woofers and fit easily in the doors. My boston acoustics SL60's fit perfectly in my front doors and sound amazing. I ended up putting another set of them in the rear so all my speakers have the same sound.

Also, its very easy to put deeper speakers in the front door panels because there is plenty of room between the mounting surface panel and the door panel itself so a spacer can be easily fabbed to bring the speaker further toward the door panel and away from the glass.

If need be, 1/4" ring out of MDF will allow clearance for...well every speaker i've ever done in doors. Lol, and i know what you mean by no glassing, as you spent too much time on it already. It was a suggestion, and i'm glad you didn't take it the wrong way like some people do. As again, good job so far.

Originally I loomed the power wire to make it look more stock, but I decided to make it a little more bling-ish (cause George likes bling) so I used techflex instead.

techflex

Mounted some more stuff on the amprack. I've since finished running the other 4 awg wires, and mounting the other neon, and started wiring up the back.

It was pretty tough to get the wires to bend at this angle.

Finally finished wiring up the battery. Wired the stereo power wire to the front post, modified the stock positive terminal and extended some wires, and ran a new 0 awg ground wire to the stock location. I had to buy a new bolt to fit the ground ring terminal because the stock one was too short.

I added a new ground to the engine block using a bolt from what appears to be an engine hoist point. It's grounded to the negative battery terminal, as you can see above.

Upgraded the stock ground w/ some extra 4 awg power wire I had (that's why it's blue. It ought to be silver but oh well)
