I went the cupholder route with my hookup because of that. Well, and the fact that I always take the iPod inside when I leave the car.

Does the Alpine have security coding if the power is disconnected? Also, does the whole faceplate detach or just a small part?

One major reason I got the Kenwood X689 back when was that it came with all 3 security systems. Flip-over faceplate, security code & detachable if you were feeling extremely paranoid...

The X001 and the X100 both look mighty sweet though! Just trying to figure out how theft-proof they are.

There's no security coding, and the detachable part is basically everything left of the screen.

reading some of the features on one of the links I have a Q:

do you need the optional ipod cable to access and control everything on the ipod, or does the included usb cable let you control everything off the headunit?

I like how it has switchable illumination

The included cable lets you control everything. It operates pretty much the same as the ipod works like being able to pick by artist, album, song name, playlist, etc and it's just as fast as using the ipod itself. I believe you can use just about anything that stores mp3s and hooks up via usb. The cable is for the ipod and the jack on the back of the headunit is a usb port.

The deck is a little bit more red and less orange than the cluster. I'll try to get a pic to show you, but I can't promise anything. All I have is a crappy cellphone camera.

Yeah the Alpine XM box is quite pricey, but it would be so nice to have everything integrated.

Ribbie if you are one of the few who have a lifetime subscription to xm you may have an issue tranfering your subscription. Otherwise shouldnt be an issue. The detatchable face on this thing is sufficient. I gaurantee if someone steals your kenwood and sees it has security lock on it they will not reinstall it for ya.

hey, how hard is it to use the radio on this? i mean with the classic headunits, they all have the 1-6 presets for stations. i was playing with this at best buy and it seemed really confusing.

I have this head unit, and I have never used the radio either! Never even bothered with the presets! Its a great unit. I love the fact that it matches my dash.
